    Re: Remembrance

Andrew, this image shows some sensitivity and even poignancy, the young girl fits well into the gap between the 2 marching soldiers, and the emphasis is upon her with the depth of field you have created.

Why then bother with the selective toning. Don't you feel its already obvious whats going on, without having to put any emphasis on things with mono and colour. Why the blue jeans though, they have no bearing on what's happening don't you think. The poppy is just too cliched don't you think.

Personally, I think I would have left it all in colour. This seems to me to be just an exercise in selective colour toning which is unnecessary, sorry

Ahh now that's a totally different, and If I may so, better picture IMO. The blue trousers works well with the red sash too, infact with the white belt of the leading soldier we have Red, white and blue very patriotic.

          Re: Remembrance

I totally agree with Stephens comments. Further adjustments of the original I feel were unnecessary.
It's a great image and the marching soldiers make a great background.

            Hi Andrew,

I like both versions with a slight preference towards the colored one.
But what is most important for me is the theme and the little girl on the side observing the entire scenery while fitted between those two men in the frame is what makes the difference.

Haha! I always enjoy happy differences - we agree a lot but this time I'm completely opposite - I think the selectively coloured version is much more powerful.

                    Re: Remembrance

First off I'd like to explain my thinking behind the photo. I think its more important to remember why these people died more than the fact that they did. people die all the time. The family's will remember the person, we have to remember why, and that is for the next generation thats why i picked out the areas of colour i did the young girl and the poppy.
You picked out the red white and blue in the colour image but its still there in the B&W one, Red poppy White coat Blue jeans. Don't get me wrong I think the image works both ways and maybe i used a sledge hammer to bring home the point. but thats why i did it.

                      Re: Remembrance

I agree with Steven that the coloured version is by far the better one. The colour of the uniforms lend to the seriousness of the scene and the angle of the girl's head, whether intentionally or not, shows reverence. I like your composition with the leading figure going out of the frame adding to the sense of movement.

In the first one I felt the grouped soldiers were just there for a background, whilst in the coloured one their caps balance the green grass, and they look as though they belong. Just my opinion of course.

OK, I'll accept your thinking, though it could be done as easily with regular and less cliched processing

                          Re: Remembrance

While I have a liking for both versions and appreciate the work involved with the selective colouring I feel that the the theme of the photograph dictates that it should be left as it is.
The young girl is definately the focus point and the composition is superb.
I do hope that she will have access to this photograph in years to come along with a full understanding of the ceromony.
