Leaf on b/w background

I have been trying to have a go at this for a long time but never seemed to find the right things to do it with. Anyway here is my go at this, does it work or is it to in your face??

Interesting idea, I think it would look better if the leaf was smaller (or maybe a few small leaves) and the black and white bit was bigger. at the moment the leaf fills the frame too much to notice the contrast IMHO

Ok I see where you are coming from on the size of the leaf I will try it again maybe with a few smaller ones. Not easy trying to find leaves that look ok at this time of year . I guess I should have done it about a month ago .

I like the colourings, but I would like to see it placed from corner to corner diagonally. You could try it with the stem at the bottom left hand corner and/or the top left hand corner - in fact in any corner. You may still find that what you did looked the best.

Hi Peter,

I would say that your attempt was very successful in terms of color combination and detail. Everything is nice exposed and clear and detail is visible as it should be.
Though, the way you put the leaf (parallel into a landscape frame) it looks very much as a setup. In other words that could be an extremely nice photo if the leaf was somehow diagonally placed on the frame.
To make it more interesting I would suggest to make the photo in portrait mode, place the leave somehow diagonally and cut part of the leave from 2 sides of your choice to make it look like a natural snap of the moment.

Of course this is my personal opinion as always.

I agree with the diagonal comp suggestions but I would also prefer a narrower leaf that would reveal more of the background.
Don't suppose you are going to get one now but you could maybe narrow that one down a bit.

Thanks Guys I see you mean about the crop. I had a quick play in photoshop and came up with this. I did try the leaf in different corners but this seemed to be the best one.

This gets a from me. It's a very striking picture, love the lumunous quality of the leaf against tha coalscape behind and placing the lead diagonally is a success too.

Definite POTD material!

This picture has come out really well, I prefer this picture to the first one. Just moving the leaf position makes all the difference. I know thats not all you have done but the leaf took up all the piccie in the first. The colours blend nicely together a lovely contrast. Well done

Yes, this is how I visualised it. I think it was worth moving it. Excellent colourings.
