  • The first of the new year in Whitby

Had a short time in Whitby today and managed a few different views before we got snowed off. Any comments would be appreciated.

    Hi

Happy New Year. I have a question rather than a comment. What is the red thing in the first picture?

    thanks

    Josh.

PS Picked up the panasonic 20mm F1.7 for the e p1 today. Off to Brighton tomorrow, as a fellow E p1 user I will let you know how it fares

Hi Josh, thats a Capstan. Wooden bars would be inserted into the holes in the top so that leverage could be applied to turn it and haul in boats and stuff

Would be interested to hear about the pancake lens, its something I've thought about, but so far have decided its too restricting for my style of photography. Off to Iceland on the 9th and am borrowing a wideangle zoom, I think it may be more useful to me

        Thanks for the info.

So of the two I prefer the first. The colour rendition adds so much to the photograph particularly the red of the capstan. It lifts the who picture whereas the second seems dull (Colour not subject matter) in comparison. If i may what camera and lens were used? This is just an interest thing.

        Best Regards

Thanks Josh, I used the E-P1 with 14-42 lens. I've actually modified the first shot and feel happier with the result.

Hi, yep that works well. Again the tone of the red really makes the picture for me. I think both versions are great if I were voting I would still go for the original. Without the red I am not sure it would still work.

            Best regards

I prefer the original post Stephen! Somehow it has more atmosphere! This one seems to have become a little 'muddy'! I really like your 2nd shot of original set! It depicts a sense of desolation & moodiness! Waves whipped by wind & freezing cold! A cruel sea!

Many thanks Jocelyn, its good that you have been moved enough to comment. My intention was to create a moody image and from that stance I feel I've been successful
