I like this a lot - clearly good enough to sell, especially because of its presentation.

Was the sky originally like that or did you desaturate it?

      I love it.
Great angle, vibrant colour and a dramatic sky

A lesson here methinks for those who like to take pictures of flowers.

Essentially this is what the picture is, however you have injected some interest, used the foreground, and apparently altered the background to make for a much more interesting picture, a flower landscape. Good stuff

That's about as good as you get. Can't say anything other than well done. Love the composition and colour control. Do lets see some more of your images.

            Hi ddigit,
A great image well photographed, processed and presented, bright cheerful and in your face,(in the nicest sense), would make a great calender image or poster for the wall, a very saleable image.

              Ian,

The sky was like this. I am capable of photoshop techniques but apart from a small bit of sharpening and cropping this photo was as it was

I love the colourful picture and the poppy appearing from the left hand corner of the image, but my eye is drawn to the patch of earth centre and lower right. I wonder if it would have been possible to move around a little to get less earth and more poppies.

                  Hi Trevor,

                  and welcome to our community.
Your photo is indeed nice. I like the color combination too.
I have to agree with Autumn about the ground that to me is slightly distracting with the otherwise very nice scenery.
Have you consider to crop the photo in half, leaving the half left right only and make it more of a portrait look?

                  Regards

                  George

A very original presentation of the flower; a refreshing change from the usual in your face photographs of flowers.

I'm afraid I can't agree with you on this one George. Its my feeling that though this suggestion may certainly be an option for a different view on the scene, in this instance it would certainly destroy the poppy landscape feel of the photograph. Trevor has managed to resist the specimen flower shot feel, so common with less experienced photographers. Your crop suggestion is a move back towards this I feel. The only really creative option IMHO is to have less depth of field, therefore putting more emphasis on the larger poppy to the left.

                          Hi Stephen,

Obviously you disagree with the cropping method I suggested. It is not the best solution I can suggest either because indeed the landscape feeling will be somewhat destroyed, but this is the only possible solution I can suggest of now since I think that the ground is somewhat distracting (the empty ground space) and suggesting aiming the camera more upwards to avoid the ground is not possible at this stage, unless this landscape scenery is still accessible to Trevor and probably he can take the same shot using a different camera angle.

Though, I also think that all of us we should generally experiment with shots and try to get out of stereotypes. For example: why scenic views should be most of the type in landscape? Or why human shots should be most of the times in portrait mode? Personally I think that the amazing thing with photography is that it is a free art and all kinds of expressions/compositions are allowed.

As far as Trevor's shot is concerned, indeed I would consider it excellent if and only if the ground was not visible.
As of now and as is, I still think that is an extremely good photo.
Though, I also think that this specific shot has the potential to look very nice in portrait mode because the DOF is OK and because there are a few poppies on the left hand side that are big and close to the camera lens and fill the foreground appropriately.

                          Regards

                          George

Superb pure colour, love the shot- patch of ground the lot! Makes the shot more natural in my opinion. As some comments suggest, some people like taking pictures of flowers & some like to make a flower the picture, 'in your face' is also good! It's all about self expression isn't it? Would love to see more of your work!

Thanks to you all who commented. It is so valuable to take onboard what you write. For those interested, I cropped the original into a portrait format to try it out. Interestingly enough my wife, (who is an artist and a pretty good photographer) really likes the portrait form. I am still drawn to the original because I think it forms a complete picture. In portrait form I think the attention is concentrated on the large poppy on the left and the poppy is not sufficiently well formed and interesting (except the colour) to sustain the attention. Thank you all again for the postings
