Took this shot recently on an early morning jaunt to Skinningrove as described in my latest Blog entry I'd appreciate any comments anyone cares to give. The photo has pretty much had nothing done to it, though it was processed using the new Lightroom Beta 3
For me, I think I would crop out the moon at the very top - it keeps drawing my eye and distracts from the glorious sky in the shot.
It's also a pity that you have a shadow bottom right.
However, as ever I hardly feel qualified to comment as it is so much better than I can do!

Many thanks for your comments and opinions Neil, it is much appreciated. I agree about the moon, its really too near the edge of the frame I think. I did consider cloning it out, but left it to see if others had an opinion.

Hi Stephen here is my two pence worth.
I find it a little lack lustre IMO when I consider what you are capable of, there is no particular place the eye can rest, I find myself jumping around the image. My approach and this is me, not you, I think I would have got in very close and taken detail texture shots. There must be hundreds worth featuring on this fence.

Patrick, many thanks and I know exactly where you are coming from. I do think it is a little lacklustre as well, though not necessarily in the way you mean. After I posted the shot, I checked again the histogram in Lightroom, and realised there was more that could be done to give it punch. I do think however there was more that could have been done to explore detail and texture, and frankly maybe I just wasn't tuned into this approach at the time

I know what you mean, sometimes we take our picture and move on without further exploration of the subject, done it many time myself. It often comes down to mood, enthusiasm for the type of image before us. On another day you may have spent a long time on the subject.
With the angle you have choosen here Stephen I sort of expect the fence to bring me along to its end and on to something else but it does not do this. So, I am wondering if a better result might have been achieved from, if possible, some other position where we could have a better view of what I feel is not a very interesting subject.
The sky is uninteresting but I feel a "good" sky may not improve this one for me.
Perhaps something else is needed to take this one up a level.

Tom, I think you have got to the nub of the problem with this picture. I do have a few taken from a different angle which may satisfy the criteria you mention. I'll try to sort one out and post it later. Many thanks for your perceptive comment, its much appreciated
I think the subject is interesting, it's exactly the sort of thing that would interest me too. Of the two, I prefer the second image, but I can't explain exactly why. I like the lighting and textures in the first image, and the landscape is interesting. However, the second image seems to have a better composition - there's a definite path for the eye to follow. I like the low viewpoint too.

Many thanks for taking the time to comment and express your thoughts. I think I maybe agree about the better composition of the second shot. Which just goes to show it helps to have the opinions of others
second one for me. There is a flow into the picture and I know where to look which imho is missing from the first. I also would like to see the send in b&W or even toned.

Hi Josh, thanks for commenting. I think what you say is fair comment and I've finally got round to uploading a Monotoned version. What do you think does it work? Oh btw, it was done in LR Beta3 to get the grain effect

Thanks Pol, its all a matter of personal choice in the end, but its often good to get the opinions of others and this thread has been useful in that respect. I'm also gratified that people have been honest with their opinions.
I'm also pleased that the final picture has all been processed in Lightroom, what a great program it has become. Saw Tim today, and he has not really embraced the program, however he is now going to download the Virtual Photographer plugin, I'm just sorry that being a Mac user its no good to me anymore, however much can be achieved in LR when it comes to fineart style processing
