I'd suggest you might just sharpen them slightly more just to bring up the hair and features (nose) and textures a touch. Not too much - just enough to pick up the light and textures a little more on the print.

I'd also suggest trying to brighten the catchlight in the eyes if possible. Maybe a new layer and a few gentle clicks or sweeps with the dodge tool.

They're very nice horsey portraits and I can well imagine how striking they'd be as enlarged prints.

Hey Mike, remember when you struggled to get the tone right on your shots? That seems like such a long time ago!

Hi Pol, I did have a slightly sharper version but actually prefered the softer look, this pony did have a soft texture to its face.
        Thanks for your comments.
Ian, it does seem an age when I look back over photo's from 3 years ago, saying that, I'm probably no better at taking a photograph just better at choosing which ones to post
As you maybe aware I'm still using an Olympus E500............with all its shortcomings although a new E620 body is a possibilty in the near future.
To my mind the e500 has always struggled with sharp contrasting light conditions, maybe the E620 will produce more consistant results.
Until then I shall continue to practice with what is at hand
