  • Boring or What?

    Hi,
This image was taken on a family day out, the scene at the time was very pleasent, when there in person, The day was sunny and warm and the atmosphere and mood was good. the end result does not impress me. What do you think?

    Hi Tinka,

Sadly I have to agree, it is a little boring.

When taking these sort of shots, try experimenting with angles, like getting down low and shooting up. Or positioning the subject off centre. The other thing to experiment with is to experiment with depth of field, using a very wide apperture (low f-value) in a combination of a high zoom to throw the background out of focus a little to isolate the fountain, as the background is very confusing and jars a little with the subject matter.

    Hope this helps!

You have summed it up pretty well. The fact that it was taken on a family day out explains it all. I find that it is impossible to take anything other than record shots when out with the family. Ether that or find they have left you way behind and giving you the hurry up look. No-photographers just don't like waiting around. I now tend to snap a few shots off and class them as reconsistent photos that after studying may entice me to go back on my own.

        Hi Tinka,

Indeed the shot is somewhat boring. Though I will try to focus my comments on the photo defects I find to be more crucial than the corners/angles of shooting as other users mentioned.

What I see, that is a little frustrating, is blown skies in the background along with wrong green hues of the tree leaves and the trees itself generally.

I understand though that a family day out is not the best time to take quality photos as I have experienced that myself. Every time my wife is with me (no kids yet), complaining for waiting for me to finish with my hobby, many of my shots don't come out as I wanted or I don't take the photos as I wish.

Photography requires isolation of the photographer to his natural environment

        Regards

        George

Tinka you can NEVER reproduce the feeling you get when you're there , all 5 senses are in play plus 3D vision , what you get in a photograph is a 2D image that sometimes lives up to your expectations , sometimes not .
I sometimes try a panorama to get more 'feel' into my shots , but mostly try to forget the whole picture , take a shot to record the scene generally , but try to use close ups to isolate small features , or use a large aperture to make the main subject stand out from the background , or try a different approach by maybe lying down or framing it with a few branches ..
I can't remember how many times i've done exactly the same as you and felt a pang of disapointment when i've looked the result sitting at home by my computer .

Sometimes what you see isn't what you get. Very often I have found that a scene pleasing to the eye turns out to be a boring scene when photographed

All the tips were true but it seems that everybody gives up too easily, any shot can be improved - no, I'll amend that statement to most shots!
I know that you use PS 7 Tinka, just try a crop or two, lighten up the dark tones, and get some detail back into the highlights, like the gravel in front of the fountain. It isn't special, but I have attached just a 2 minute PS example of your photo, and I am sure that you could do better.

                Hi all,
Many thanks for the comments and tips, yes the family do keep giving you the hurry up treatment, and I am forever playing catchup, I really will have to get out on my own more often. Hi Rogleale, your image is a slight improvement, but the image is really a "Snapshot" record shot, lost cause, " I get a lot of them , But of course it may produce a "Work of art" with some manipulation "I think not"
