  • Infra Red

    Hi
As some of you may remember I had my old Canon 10D converted to IR early this year. I did at the time post one or two shots but they didn't particularly exploit the capability to isn't full effect.

Here are a few more, harsh constructive criticism welcome.

I like the lamp image, for me it has the most impact and holds my interest more than the others.

I'm curious about the process that you go through to get these images.

I assume you still have to put the IR Filter on the front ? and that the conversion is just to increase the IR sensitivity, by removing the sensor filter

Again I assume you compose first, then attach the filter before exposure. Do you have to adjust focus as was needed with film ?

Sorry if this is more questions than comments

Patrick, I think any one of these shots stand up on their own, and I personally like them all. If I was to choose I too would go for the lampost shot as my favourite, but also I love the shot of the wheels.

However I'm pretty sure I would like the shots as much were they in their normal colour state, or converted to mono. I have to say though that I don't really 'GET' the false colour effect created by IR. I have seen a few I like, but generally speaking I tend to feel that the shot isn't really enhanced that much by the use of IR. In these shots you have chosen scenes with lots of green vegetation, which surely show the IR effect, I just wonder though what the point is and whether you would have taken them had you not been using IR. If not then I would say you haven't taken the shot for the subject and composition, rather just for the effect.

I think I would like to see some shots with more blue sky with white interesting clouds effects

          Hi Stephen

Some shots (not these) I also did in normal colour, some shots work and some don't. The lamp I'm sure has worked out very different to a regular Mono shot, but yes there are occasions when a normal mono would work just as well. There is some truth in your remark that the picture is taken for the effect rather than the composition, although I like to think I give that a lot of thought, and that the effect adds to the composition.
IR does have something of its own, its a question of whether or not the viewer likes that effect. Personally I love it.
If I'm honest I have not yet managed to exploit the thing as I would like.
I will sort through and see if I have some with sky's that I am willing to expose to criticism, the foliage is always a feature and can give quite a spooky effect sometimes.
          That word effect again.
