Well I've had another go, using some of the advice so helpfully given by other forum members on my last attempt! This time using a larger, more recognizable part of opera house that had more potential for playing with selections & colour! However, having said that, I don't know how to overcome the pixelated background that became apparant after conversion!

Re: Sydney Opera House Itself
Hi Jocelyn,
Nice image I like the combination of mono and color, I think it has been well done, I don't know, but the pixelated background Could be that you resampled the image in resizeing
? if useing photoshop, untick the resample box to see if this cures the problem, if useing another prog. Perhaps some one on the forums more skilled and experienced than I can advise.

Re: Sydney Opera House Itself
That's terrific Jocelyn I really like it. A very different picture to what one normally gets - makes it look very glam.
If it were me I would select the pixilated sky and just blue it slightly - I know that probably isn't very good advice but sometimes it can give a very nice effect - In PS you can choose a radial type blur and choose the point from which you want it to radiate from.

Re: Sydney Opera House Itself
Lovely job of selective colouring.
I would be tempted to crop the right side so as to make the main building the centre of attention and perhaps a bit from the bottom to maintain ratio-------------------------

Re: Sydney Opera House Itself
Yes I am using photoshop cs2 but I also have the Corel or Jasc 9 & sometimes swop between the 2! I find it a tad easier for some things in CS2 tho'! I must say , I still don't know how to chage sizes & go to dropdown of image size & use arrow untill the image is approx 250k, being the required limit for download! Sometimes this means reducing the quality of image right down to LOW unfortunately! There may be other ways, but I don't know how to as yet! Nxt time I'll check the resample box before saving edited image! Thanx!Originally posted by Tinka View PostHi Jocelyn,

Re: Sydney Opera House Itself
Great picture and post processing. I particulary like the two tone sea with the distinct line in the water. The pixelation has already been commented on but solve that and there is a great picture.
Best Regards

Hey Pops, that is exactly what I would do. It must be because we are both veterans and come from a similar part of the UK.

Re: Sydney Opera House Itself
Thanx for your comments. I've sat today trying to incorporate a number of suggestions & in the process of doing so, learning a bit & increasing my ability slightly! Although using layers & selections etc, etc, changing skies & what have you, the result is far from perfect, but i'm improving myself nonetheless! I will post an attachement of my latest attempt.Originally posted by Josh Bear View PostGreat picture and post processing. I particulary like the two tone sea with the distinct line in the water. I actually like your original, although I think the colour a little too saturated for me.
With regard to your latest attempt, well done! You have obviously tried something new and succeeded to some extent - by that I mean you have inserted another sky. It takes quite a lot of patience to get the new sky and the adjacent pixels blended correctly. I know, because I don't do it correctly but I see people who do. I think I am too impatient with my selections. It is just a question of practise.
Another thing, which doesn't sit right in this picture is the fact that the sea does not now reflect the sky.
Anyway it's all good fun and you have a super picture of the Opera House. We started a cruise from Sydney last year and I couldn't wait to get the pics of the Opera House. Unfortunately, my compact flash card "Fried" and I lost all my pictures of the Opera House, plus many more.
Well done anyway.

Re: Sydney Opera House Itself
Thanx for your comments. The image straight from the camera had amazing reflections of the building in the water/foreground..oranges & yellows etc. For that reason I think I prefer colour photography as a lot of detail & subtleties is lost in B&W. On the other hand B&W used for dramatic purposes is great, especially portraits! Isn't it awful when you lose photos for any reason & can't replace the shots! Dang & Blast huh!Originally posted by Autumn View PostHi Jocelyn

Hi Jocelyn,
The Sydney Opera House is a well known architecture and a nice theme for a photographer. The color effect applied is also nice. As far as the pixelation is concerned, it might be due to harsh brightness/contrast adjustments of the image that affects more visibly the high-low contrast areas. I don't think it is caused by resizing because the pixelation effect would be on the entire picture.
What was the original image size?
Regards
George

I think you are right about the harsh brightness at time of taking shot! The original size was 1600 x 1200Jocelyn
