Re: Sydney Opera Hse Steps
Hi Jocelyn,
A great idea, I do love mono and what can be achieved with it. Your attempt at selective coloring/toneing is on the right lines, it is a shame the background image highlights are blown out, is this a color conversion, if so and the highlights and image are correctly exposed, then perhaps a different method of conversion should be used. The couple look fine on my screen. Don't be discouraged, I am on the learning curve myself, and I look to practice and help from others to try to improve, I also read a lot and watch video's which I find a great help.Catch Ya Later

If you don't try you never learn Jocelyn , nothing wrong with the idea maybe just the subject , which is'nt the strongest .
2 main points (1) the couple should stand out more , they look lost in scene , maybe a crop ?and(2) the colour brown is'nt the best to show up against a black and white subject , it needs a stronger colour contrast .
When i do a selective colour i zoom in tight and use a small brush and quick mask , carefully fill in around the outline and then enlarge the brush for the middle , as you get more proficient you can practise with the extract filter .
Keep practising and try to pick out a bold colour .
It fills in a winters evening .

A good attempt Jocylen. You picked a difficult one to start with due to it being very spacious.
I pass away hours with this sort of thing and have just put 3 examples in my gallery.
One of them is here.

Thanx for your advice but I am nowhere near knowing how to use masks & extract filters yet. I only know how to use the adjustments ie contrast, levels, saturation etc. I am very new to this game & find PS quite daunting, a massive learning curve! One day I will become more proficient as you say....hopefully! I will try out some of the advice like cropping & colour contrast tho'!Jocelyn
