  • CC Request - Portrait

    Hello everyone,

Here's a portrait of Kenley, my 5 month old nephew. He's a big boy weighing 20lbs now! He was a delight to photograph yesterday with his big sister Lillie. There are a few in my gallery, thumbs attached.

I have had some focus problems recently, but this shoot was pretty successful with regard to exposure and focus. I'd love your critique on this when you get time.

    Thanks,

    Gina

These all look sharp Gina, so no problems there. The colour also looks pretty good, no problems with colour casts as I've seen before. Generally speaking you have a pretty good set of images which I'm sure mum will be pleased with.

For me though the biggest problem remains the shadow caused by the on camera flash. Its particularly evident in the large shot under the chin. In an ideal world you need a second flash or the ability to use a flashgun off camera and then reflected back from the other side. However flashguns are not cheap and so perhaps you should consider something to diffuse the flash and bounce it off the ceiling

Thanks Stephen, yes I can see the shadows under his chin. I forgot to take my reflector which would have helped. It's always bedlam when I visit my sister. Kenley is her 7th child, she has 4 of them living at home and 4 grandchildren, 2 of which are there every day. I was taking photos with her ironing clothes behind me, 2 little ones clinging around my legs, a pushchair to my left and an inflatable toy to my right. I don't think I had much of a chance to use a reflector under those conditions. Had to take shots in 2 sessions but I'm very happy with the outcome and my sister is thrilled to bits. I could always do a tighter crop on his face?
