  • I don't do landscapes.......

....which is a bit unfortunate, given that I live in the beautiful county of Rutland. So I need to learn.

Here is my latest effort - how could I make it better? and specifically, is the sheep feeder and sheep in the foreground a good idea to give interest, or an ugly distraction? (personally I think it was a mistake )

    Regards,

    Neil.

Hi Neil, I think the sheep need to occupy more of the foreground - get closer in. They are much stronger as an element of the view than the background.

As it is, nothing is strong enough to captivate.

      Thanks Ian.

Your phrase that "nothing is strong enough to captivate" is really helpful - I suppose the problem I have had is walking in a beautiful pastoral scene and thinking that is enough to make an interseting photograph - it clearly isn't! - I'll try again and think about what is going to captivate!

      Regards,

      Neil

Yes - sorry about the apparent 'blunt' - ness - I hope you don't take offence and my meaning has got through

I would think the sheep are an added interest to the rural scene, but not the feeder! It seems to detract some of the beauty in scenery! If you had shot from a bit further to your right, the gravel road could've led the eye into scenery a little more! Using a lower angle to include foreground interest (a boulder even) or framing pic with foliage or something sometimes adds to interest...that is if you can find a point which includes the middle interest & beautiful background scenery! Seeing such beautiful pastoral scenery does inspire one.....the more pics you take from all different angles the better!

I'm not sure I agree about the feeder Joc. The fact is that this is a pastoral scene in a man made landscape. The feeder is part of the lanscape and though it may not be to everyones taste in the beauty stakes, in a hundred years time I wouldn't mind betting it would be considered quaint. One only has to look at the paintings of Constable to see examples of farm equipment.

I think Neil has done right to encorporate it into the image, but agree with Ian regarding there is no real strong element in the image. The picture could be enhanced a little perhaps by a bit of post processing, maybe a slight crop, adding a little mid tone contrast, even sharpening.

I do agree though with the other points Joc has made
