  • First City night pictures

    Dear All,

Spent the day in London yesterday. Decided to stay in for the evening. I have only just started working on the files but wanted to post a couple (or so) to get started.

This is the first time I have taken night shots in a city. Any tips on how to improve techniqiue would be appreciated. All pictures taken with a Canon 5d Mark 2. The first two with a tripod and various lee filters (where required). The third was hand held at Iso 2000

    best regards

    Josh

I think all three are great, its a toss up between one and two for favourite. Our club theme for next time is purple (stupid colour when you only have a couple of weeks to come up with something) but looking at the London eye in your first pic that looks around the right colour, shame Im in Guernsey...
I would be happy with these, I will be interested to see what the experts come up with to help you improve these

Purple's not a stupid colour Mowgli, it's the best colour! I'm biased though, as I currently have bright purple hair.

Love all three of those shots, the first is my favourite. Stunning!

          Re: First City night pictures

          Great pictures!

Only comment/question (not really a critique!) applies to the second shot.

On the streetlights on the bridge, you get round "blobs" of light to the right of the actual light source. (I can see four to the right of the nearest light - two multicoloured and two plain white, and two white near the second light)

When I've tried similar nightshots - which came out nowhere near as good as these I must say! - I noticed a smilar effect.

Does anyone know what they are, and how to reduce/remove the effect without post-processing?

          Regards,

          Neil

            Hi

Thanks for the comments. re the blobs I believe it is flare cased by refelction on the lens or small bits of dust on the lens.

            Hopefully someone can confirm.

            best regards

Great shots - like them all... particularly the London Eye, as I had an attempt at that last year but (1) it was pouring with rain and (2) I didn't have a tripod...

I also like the sense of movement in the last shot.

I really like the first two. the colours reflected in the water are fantastic. I must say its the third photo that does it for me. I can almost see another photo in a mag coming up. What sort of settings did you use in that last one.

                    Hi

                    Thanks for the comments all,

                    Settings were 1/10th second, F7.1 Iso 2000 using a 24-105 mm lens.

Josh, a superb set of pics you've captured! However, for me the one taken earlier, with a little colour still left in the sky, is just TOPS for me personally! I love how the chimneys are sillhouetted against the sky!
