  • Late afternoon light....

    ....at Saltaire church.

I would have preferred to have lost the vehicles to the left, but managed to hide them a little in the processing. Some converging verticles but thought it may have suffered for correction.

    Any comments welcome

Nice gentle picture Stephen. I like the light. I have only just noticed the cars - well hidden. Converging verticals? I am into them ATM.

      Re: Late afternoon light....

Bit of an illusion here to me with the building. I get the impression that it is tilting slightly to the right however...could those two lights be causing it, both leaning towards each other, or maybe the fact that the support columns are leaning inwards.
The bulding itself is magnificent and I love how those two flanking tree's have been captured. Would be nice to see it in full light.
Also find that the small area of over brightness, just above the cars, is a distraction. Had the pic in WE to look at and that section kept pulling my eyes.
I'll be very interested in reading other comments about this shot.

Hi Pops, thanks for your comments, I know exactly what you mean about an illusion. I thought much the same, but I've put a grid over it and I can't obviously see any problems, other than what I've mentioned. As for the brightness, well thats the sun, the light source, often problematical

            Re: Late afternoon light....

            Hi,

Love the light, like the central composition. But the illusion of tilt keeps bugging me. Even though I know it is an illusion, my brain is saying "Straighten that thing up!!".

So I actually find the illusion detracting from the photograph.

            Best Regards

              Re: Late afternoon light....

I feel the image would have looked more natural in portrait mode. The main subject looks cramped and out of place in a landscape format. It's a very nice scene that really needed to be shot from further back, if that was possible, or two shots stitched together so that more foreground and sky could be included. I'm sure this is one scene worth going back on and trying again. Those two lights would benefit from not having their base cropped off.

Sorry Stephen, I guess I just expected that you had another angle on it. That's much better. I did like the overall scene of the other one. A two shot stitched image of that would also look great.

Sometimes I feel converging verticals can add some extra nobility to buildings and I think this is the case here. The shaft of light on the foreground is lovely as is the light on the circle of trees surrounding the building. The colouring in general is rich and mature. All making for a very nice photograph.

Funny how the time is the same and the lampost's have straightend themselves up

Great light. I hate cars (well, when they get in the way!) but you don't really notice them in these shots.

I prefer the landscape shot myself although the top of the spire is a bit close to the top of the frame perhaps?

I'm working on a 21 image pano of Canterbury cathedral and I've wasted hours trying to get a decent image with upright verticals - perhaps I should take a leaf out of your book and just go with the flow

                              Hi Stephen,

The shot is very nice indeed. Nice colors, nice building and correct time and generaly the scenery as a whole is extremely nice.
I agree with you about the cars, but the biggest photographer's problem is only that we cannot always have the theme exactly as we want

A minor observation I want to point, is that I would like more if you had cut a little more the ground part (let's say a little before the first car starts) and add that space on the top of the buiding, just because that thin column on top of the building and generally the top of the building looks somehow more close (at least for my preference) to the upper edge of the photo.

It is already a great photo though as is too.

                              Regards
