  • Summer Rain & Mist in Assisi

For those of you who don't particularly like 'toning', perhaps I could ask you to critique other aspects of the image! With this image, I have applied Quad toning, with a bit of dodge & burn! Your comments & suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks!

I like the image especially as it draws you up the street with the people. The only downside for me is the tower in the background which is a distraction.

I would agree, I scrolled the picture so it had a square format with the whole of the tower (and clear sky area) removed, it felt like a completly different picture and far more pleasing. It must be pretty quiet around there despite the amount of parked cars as it looks like th people near the centre are walking almost in the middle of the road

Re: Summer Rain & Mist in Assisi

I wanted the tower to appear ghostlike, as it was actually shrouded in mist! The buildings are the monastery of Assisi, built way on top of a large hill! Francis of Assisi founded the order of Franciscan monks! If you saw the movie 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' many years ago, it was filmed there! There were quite a number of tourists there, mostly by motorcoach! So many of the little streets had very little traffic! It was raining & cold, so that also would've kept some tourists away! The atmosphere there is one of utter tranquility & harmony!
I can appreciate your comments re tower being a distraction! Do you think this may partly be because it is not contrasted against the sky? Maybe I will have a bash at cloning it out!

I used a slightly different toning etc to the same image to enhance contrast! May seem a little too dark, that's why I posted the previous image! Which do you prefer, or think is better & for what reason? Comments appreciated!

Re: Summer Rain & Mist in Assisi

I am finding it really hard to chose between the two versions. I love the mist in the first I think it has more atmosphere than the second but the tower looks like it shouldn't really be there.

In the second the tower looks great but the rest of the picture has lost that air of mystery.

            Best regards

Jocelyn, I think the first is a lovely, almost timeless image with your toning, in spite of the inclusion of the cars. I like the misty, heavy feel to it, though a slight rotation CW would stop me feeling that I am leaning to the left. The slope to the left is increased by the line at the bottom of the road. You have caught a super depth though, I would love to climb the hill exploring further.

I am unsure about the shrouded tower, something does not feel right, but at the same time that perhaps adds to the mystique which the photograph suggests. It does look better in your second image but I find that one too dark for my tastes. I do like the toning in the first.

                Lovely shot Jocelyn - but!
Playing with your pic myself I liked it more with the tower just a tiny shade lighter than the houses just in front of it, and just a bit darker than the sky. Lighter than the sky it looks a bit negative I think.
