    Re: Second Thoughts

    Hi Tom

I really like this picture and aren't you the lucky one having visited China.

I don't normally critique pics, but as you asked, here goes. The picture, for me, is split in two by the horizon.

I have cropped it and lightened the shadows a touch. What do you think?

I have never been to China, but do like other parts of Asia we have visited.

      Hi Tom,
In my opinion this image is superb the man in red is in the right place and grabs your attention then you are led into and around the picture and back to the man. were you able to expose the image that evenly in one go? as to me the image exposure for forground and sky looks spot on.

Beautiful shot,Tom. Lovely colours and appropriate title.

I agree with Audrey about the cop though. I reckon she's about spot on regarding taking a bit off the top so the horizon disn't quite so central thus chopping the picture in half - then shaving a bit off the left side to balance things.

          Re: Second Thoughts

The picture has appeal. The presence of the Tibetan monk for me immediately urges me to try and see more into it than there probably is to see mainly becuase I have got a deep respect for this religion. At first I made the wrong assumption about the perspective of the picture and thought that the white things in the bushes immediately surrounding the rock in the foreground was rubbish but on closer examination see that they are actually further away and are buildings. Are they the monestary buildings by any chance or are those behind the photographer? The placing of the horizon line did not bother me but I thought there was a slight blow out in the white of some of the clouds - but that's really just nit picking

            Hi Tom
            I LIKE! Why?
The subject on the right, looking into the picture, across the wide plain towards the city, his little village below disapearing into obscurity. then his gaze travels to the mouontains on the horizon and up into the sky. A free-flowing momeet, well captured.
Having said this, subjectivity comes to play and I would rop off about an inch on the left, to get rid of thet small white building, and give more of a postbox vertical format to the picture. I would then also crop of a bit of the sky to get more of a 35 mm format crop. Lastly, i would add some punch by upping the saturation a wee bit. As said, subjective, as i believe all critiques to be.
            Regards
            Callie

Thanks to you all for your comments.
I take on board the comments regarding the crop from the top. Tinka, I did play about with the levels on the sky and then the foreground and I'm glad you consider the exposure to be fine.
The actual monastery is behind the monk and the little village in the foreground is actually outside the walls of the monastery.
              Thanks again everyone.

I think this is a wonderful photograph made by the presence of the monk. (is that really trainers he is wearing) I agree about a top crop being required but the left hand side doesn't bother me at all.
The monk is probably tut tutting to himself about the industrial looking haze over the city

                  Outstanding shot Tom.

The whole picture has a feeling of contemplation about it.

                  Nice work.

Ben and Pops; thank you so much.
Trainers alright! You should see the monks on the motorbikes taking phonecalls as they head for town.
