Re: Candid heritage station master
Lovely sharp picture with wonderful out of focus background which makes the Inspector stand out. Natural skintones and colour. What more can I say, its a pleasing study of the man, can't really fault it, except a more pronounced catchlight in the eyes may have helped

Thanks Stephen, alas the chap's cap was doing its job and so his eyes were shaded.Originally posted by Stephen View PostLovely sharp picture with wonderful out of focus background which makes the Inspector stand out. Re: Candid heritage station master
I agree with Stephen.
It is a really nice photo of this guy. Like Stephen said it would have been nice to see a bit more of his eyes but when it is a candid this is not always easy to do.

Thanks Peter. I wonder if flash might have helped, but I was some 20 feet away from him. I did find his face an interesting one - plenty of textureOriginally posted by peter View PostI agree with Stephen.

Re: Candid heritage station master
Ian, I was going to suggest in my earlier post that had I been doing a job and photographing people such as this, I would definitely have used flash. I often use a continuous burst for such people type jobs and the Hi Speed setting on my camera makes sure I can cope with 'Blinkers' The knock on effect is that often the first and often second shot the flash fires and the third shot it doesn't, but at least I have a shot without flash to compare. The fill in flash sorts out the shadows usually, and I don't see 20ft as a problem for your flashgun. However I appreciate that in the circumstances of your shoot, you didn't have the flashgun attached.Originally posted by Ian View PostThanks Peter. Re: Candid heritage station master
I was at a inter club meeting the other day and was watching the pictures been put up when a b/w portrait was put up it just pulled me in. The eyes were just spot on but it was the texture of the skin that really pulled me in. I know the guy that the photo belongs to and also know he would have put in hours of work into it but it does just show that sometimes it is not always about the eyes.Originally posted by Ian View PostThanks Peter. Hi Pops -
I just went out to check if I still had my Falcon in the pipe rack. Sadly not - such a cool smoke. I have four wood pipes and one Mearsham - all have not been used for a number of years. Fortunately I gave up smoking some nine years ago (some days as many as sixty) I just hope my lungs have repaired themselves a little.
Ian -
I liked this guy from the word go - you couldn't get a word in - quite colourful.
I'm sure if he received a copy of that he would be most pleased.
I'm sure it has all been said above - colour, extremely good with great skin texture, pin sharp - as his hairs on the back of his neck.
Overall a classic pic from times past.
As you can see I like it very much.
Regards. Barr1e
