    Dear All,

Just got back from a week in Cornwall. We stayed in a cottage just above the harbour in Mevagissy and on my first morning there I went down to the Quay side for sunrise. As it happens everyday after this was filled with rain so I am pleased I got myself out of bed!

Picture taken with a canon 5d using a 24-105mm lens, lee graduated filters (.9 for the see and .6 for the sky), Mirror lock up and of course a tripod.

    Anyway comments and critique welcomed.

    Best Regards

    Josh

    Hi Josh -

I would liked to have been there.

Apart from the sea being a little too red for me the picture is extremely good. I like the lone fisherman and the situation he is in - a lot to be viewed in a small area, good tones and reflection. .

    Regards. Barr1e

A very nice shot, simplistic, well composed and interesting colours that may not be to everyone's taste but that takes nothing away from the image.....JIM

I just love the whole picture. I wish that the weather had been like that last year when I went there.
The capture of the fisherman to me just adds that finishing touch. Lovely calm water beautiful colours.

            Good one Josh

Thanks All. I really concentrated on my technique for this picture and wanted to prove to myself I knew how to use my equipment to produce a pleasing picture.

                  Re: Sunrise

I'd agree with everybody about this picture, the colour, the composition, the fisherman etc. Great stuff.

However, I wonder if the 5 sec exposure has smoothed the water too much, esp in the foreground, which becomes rather monotonous ot lacking in interest. A faster exposure would maybe have left more texture in the water. Cropping an inch or so off the bottom may help, but its personal preference in the end

                    Hi

I don't disagree, in fact I took pictures at various shutter speeds from 0.6 of a second through to 5 seconds. I choose the latter as I was looking for that smooth effect. But as you say it is personal choice. The 0.6 second exposure is posted below for a comparison.

Re the crop I really agonised about this. When I reviewed the pictures that evening I instantly thought "I wish there wasn't so much space at the bottom of the picture" but after a long time considering decided that I liked the smoothness of the sea within the harbour wall so much that I would leave it in.

With that said I did hope that the weather would improve so I could go back and get the same picture but with less sea in the foreground.

Thanks for the critique I do love the different perspectives you get here.

                    Best Regards

                      Re: Sunrise

This is one of those shots that you can play with for hours and then spend even more time merging the sky from the short exposure with the sea of the long exposure. I'm more impressed that you took the time to get it right in the camera in the first place and thought about what you were doing.

The end results are both very good compositions and better for being the result of the skills that you have developed.

Like you, I like the silky effect on the sea of the long exposure, but I prefer the colouration of the sky from the shorter exposure. I also have a liking for "widescreen" format images so the crop off the bottom would improve this for me as well.

I've seen a lot of coastal sun rises and they can be real tricky to get right. As well as being lucky with the one opportunity, you really have made the very best of the view and produced an excellent photo.

Hi Josh, I think I prefer your original shot posted as the fisherman is better situated and prefer the longer exposure on the sea, although I do prefer the sky and colours in your second shot.
