Re: Elise
The eye's are not as sharp as ide like and the expression does not do it for me to be a wall hanger, also the face has no definition or depth and looks flat!
But other than that great snapshot!

Very sweet, very innocent and a nice capture imo.Originally posted by coupekid View PostHi All,
I would love to know your thoughts on this shot of my daughter, any critique gratefully received.
I think maybe I'd have preferred a portrait mode composition, perhaps with a touch more at the top and probably cropped (in camera) approximately at the edge of and including her ears. What I'm getting at would be to try home in on the face so that it fills the frame.
I tried a portrait mode crop in PS but there isn't enough height in the picci you posted for a full portrait mode example. However, I'm attaching an example of the general idea of sort of framing I had in mind and hoping you won't mind.
I wouldn't mind in the slightest if you want to remove my attachment after you've looked at it.

Re: Elise
I agree with pol I think the hood is a bit to much.

Hmmmmm..... not 100% sure what you mean there Ash. The eyes are nice and sharp on the original (and dont look too bad on my monitor), and the face has definition where needed. But thanks for the comment.....(snapshot...hurumph!Originally posted by ash View PostThe eye's are not as sharp as ide like and the expression does not do it for me to be a wall hanger, also the face has no definition or depth and looks flat!

Thanks Pol, this is kind of what feedback I was hoping to hear. Although, I didnt want to mention anything to bias what people would say.Originally posted by Pol View PostVery sweet, very innocent and a nice capture imo.

I tried the same crop as what you have done here, and felt that the loss of the hood, unbalanced the picture slightly. The other thing I wasnt sure about, was straightening the shot. She is slightly tilting her head.
Unfortunately, this is straight out of the camera in terms of composition, so I think a portrait is out.
As far as reposting pictures, I never mind, and would encourage people to do the same, as I feel you cant beat demonstrating, rather than explaining. |
Cheers Pol!

I've just been looking at it again and I think you may have a point about straightening the original slightly.Originally posted by coupekid View PostThanks Pol, this is kind of what feedback I was hoping to hear. Although, I didnt want to mention anything to bias what people would say.

What I would suggest would be to tilt the angle slightly so that you can make a selection - along the lines of the cropped idea. Then do a sort of oval or circular feathered vignette (feather at approx 150 pixels or thereabouts) then copy/paste the feathered selection onto a plain/white new 8x10 canvas.
That should enable you to get an 8x10 portrait with the picci of Elise angled and pasted in as you want it - with her set against the 'high key' background. You could do that, or all sorts of other things with that picci imho.
As a matter of fact I recently did something along those lines for my mother-in-law. Created a composite of three people on a white 8x10 white backround canvas. I had to do it that way as I didn't have a picci of the 3 of them together and at the same time.
