Oh yes, a very impressive little story.

I love the rendering, it almost looks like infra red.

The composition, exposure and quality of these two photographs is eye-catching, together with the sepia toning.

I would be interested to hear about your processing. Is it the same as on the recent "Soles" image?

I like your images- especially when I saw the second one as it reminded me of a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson - FROM A RAILWAY CARRIAGE Imagine you are in one of those carriages/cars and hearing the beating of the wheels to rails and saying in rhythm -


Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle,
All through the meadows, the horses and cattle:
All of the sights of the hill and the plain
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again, in the wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.

Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles;
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And there is the green for stringing the daisies!

I'm not a great fan of the pseudo infra red effect unless it is used creativley. In this instance the second shot justifies the use of the filter IMHO whereas using it with the first seems somehow to be unjustified, I mean why would I want to see green leaves that are white

Not being a fan of this type of photo it just does not work for me. Having said that I would like to see the second in colour with maybe a tighter crop on the right hand side. The reason for the crop would be to just lose the cars on the right.

because the scene is boring IMO and i figured i'd use the same process as the second to fit with my little story.

no, for the digital IR effect, i use a hoya r72 ir filter on a d70s. works fairly well at times. the newer nikon d series carmeras have a more effective ir blocker which makes it very tough to pull them off. with the d70s, you're looking at 2 - 3 secs exposure times, whereas 30+ seconds is required for a d80 for example.

I've been watching this thread with great interest because I'm not usually very keen on the IR effect. However, I keep coming back to look because there's something about these two images that I really, really like.

I find them rather surreal, fascinating and somehow amusing. I love the 'streak' in the second one and I also love that 'dental mirror' on the opposite platform. Y'know the ones - handheld little mirror so you can make sure you've cleaned behind the teeth properly. Well there's one of those on the right and the 'streak' is the tongue.

I also love the colour tones. I usually do like the sepia tones you use, Jon. Do you do them with the colour balance sliders?

Very nice stuff Jon, you have posted similar ir images on the forum before and I have always liked them, I love this second image especially.
Whatever ingredients you are using to capture these ir images then its obviously working and is a refreshing change from the 'NORM'
