Dear All,

Haven't been around since August. (Family illness). Anyway as some of you know I tend to take landscape pictures (see here http://www.pbase.com/joshbear/2006) but decided to try my hand at a flower shots.

I was going for impact and wanted flowers that lept off the page. Have I acheived this?

I think so Josh, I think so.
The first two are fantastic, I really like them. With the third one you are just showing off The last one is great though I'm not personally keen on the frame treatment you have given it.

All in all though Josh a really great job.
Oh and btw hope all is better with the family illness business.

A lovely set of still life shots. I really like the almost posterised colours. Can I suggest instead of the complicated system to get a pure white background, mask out the flowers and make the masked area white?

Hi Ian,

You know I have never really mastered the use of masks. I probably should go back to the books and read up on how. I

used to use the magic wand tool to select the background and then use brightness tool to turn the background white but even with feathering, it always looked false. It is this that led me to wanting to get the shot right as much as possible when taking it and then only needing to tweak in photoshop afterwards and without the funds for a portable studio i decided to go DIY.


I have a scott kelby book somewhere I will have a read about masks tonight in bed. (oh the life I lead )

Tulips were never on my list of favourite flowers but I must say you did an excellent job with these ones imho, particularly with the 2nd and 3rd, the ones with the water droplets.

Nice job with that graduated frame too. I'm not sure about the width and but it was neverthless well worth the time you spent on the tutorial.

I have Scott Kelbey books too but often just cba with the hard copy so I sometimes look at some of his Quicktime tutorials on the NAPP site. I also look at Russell Brown's quicktime tutorials. He's a senior designer (or similar) at Adobe HERE

wow ! wow ! oh god these are beautifull & they certainly lept of screen/pg at me...although last one in frame doesnt do it for me, but hey i cant even get mine in focus so dont matter what i think

Good of you post the setup details Josh.
That first shot is a cracker and I like the idea of using the subjects colours for a frame ..... maybe the frame is a bit to wide though and tends to distract from the Tulips

Even though I prefer generally natural photos and not so much the "photoshopic" creations, your interpetation of the tulips is indeed very nice.
I like mostly the 2nd and the 4th.
Personally I think that the frame in the last photo couldn't be better in terms of color combination for the specific theme.
