  • Two Wrecks

I'll be interested to hear any of your comments on this one. In colour it was too pretty, and didn't show what I feel whenever I visit this graveyard for boats. These were too of the langoustiers from Camaret-sur-Mer that used to go as far as Mauretania for their fishing.

Perhaps it need something with the sky and the water .... just a wee bit plain .... a nice 'brooding' sky, reflected in the water ?

Looks a really interesting place though ..... perhaps some low angles ... looking along the 'skeleton' ?

      Hi Rog

I think the picture feels a little too soft. Also there appears to be a strange line? on the left of the picture about an inch from the top along the horizon ending at the hull of the boat, if its a rope it seems very taught compared to the other ropes.

Like the black and white idea though, I am sure as you said the impact would be lost in colour

You are quite right Mowgli, there is a rope there and I hadn't even noticed it. It is taught because the wrecks float at spring tides and have to be restrained. I shall clone that out!

I would have to agree that the ropes ruin it for me. It takes away from the "oldness" and graveyard feel of the image. Other than using Photoshop not sure what you can do about that other than use a good sharp knife.

I might try shooting the wrecks separately or change up the angle. There seems to be what looks like a third wreck partly in frame on the right that distracts from the mood. I keep thinking “what’s that?”

I like the mood of the B&W image and I am not a fan of B&W. Color just would not create the same mood.

I like how the keel of the wreck in the foreground leads the eye to the second wreck.

          Keep up the good work!

It's the critique forum so I will be respectful but direct! For me the main problem is that the highlights are burned out. A picture of this style demands detail in these areas for it to work. I actually don't mind the ropes.

              Hi Ian,
You are quite right, the highlights are burnt out - just trying to get the gritty, old newspaper look! Try this other view - highlights carefully adjusted to 245 in CS3.

You have certainly achieved the aged view and if that was the original aim - I must apologise as I was thinking of a different one
