I'm baffled by the ratings in the gallery section? who gives them , one person or anybody , does a later rating succeed an earlier one .
I'm only asking because i got a 2 for this pan shot , which means that whoever rated it , thought it was practically useless .
In my defence i think this is one of the best pans i've ever got and the vulture was traveling at about 40mph .

Me too, I just gave that a rating of 9/10 and it's now showing 5.5 must be on average marks.

Just guessing Bigbob, whoever gave the low rating perhaps is less than happy with the fact that this was a captive bird and therefore not in its natural environment. This sort of photograph is highly frowned upon on the Bird Forum.com Caged and captive birds are not to be shown there, along with, it seems, a few other things that are considered nono's

As Lumix says the rating system averages itself out. For my own part I'd switch it off altogether. IMHO if you want comment or critique let it be on the forum where it can take its chances and opinions are in the open. Its too easy to hide behind an anonymous method of expressing oneself.

        A 2!
I believe that if you are to leave a rating that low, it would have been courtious to explain why.

Yes it is a captive bird, but many birds like this wouild not be seen (in the UK) if they were not captive.

I see nothing wrong with captive animals, providing they have everything they need. Many zoos etc, I hate, because they are simply there to be geared up for money making, and give animals minimal space.

The Hawk conservancy have many 'captive' birds, but they want for nothing, and are given lots of excercise, much like this bird looks like its getting.

I really like this shot, you get the real feeling of speed. It appears a little flat and dark, and some 'tweaks' could remedy that.

          Hi bigbob,

Personally I think that all of us shouldn't take the rating (voting) so much into account. The reason is that anybody can vote with any rating for his/her own personal reasons.

For exapmple in your photo, I would give a high rating by judjing the photo in terms of speed capture (and that is the point this photo should be judged with) and not in terms of scenery.

Also, just the reason that someone gave a rating of 2 in a photo shows biased intention. Personally I wouldn't bother to vote for a photo that I don't like at all. In the contrary, I would vote for photos that I like.

          Regards

I think this is a very nice photograph, but I suppose it could be said that the (vulture?) is not the prettiest of birds? That could be the reason? I wouldn't fret too much about it. It could even have been an innocent mistake.

Thanks all for your imput .
I'm not into 'ataboys' so i'm not posting this because i'm upset , i'm just trying to get an insight into the rating system .
As Stephen has said it could be someone is upset by the shot , or as Ian has said a mistake .
Problem with this kind of rating system is that it can become distorted by one rogue vote , i'd rather see a genuine comment box allowed , but that has been discused and dismissed .
A few of my seascapes have been rated but i see that other members have either very few or none at all , most of these shots deserve some mention IMO.
So i'm going to have a look tonight on some sites and try to be fair .
Just wish it was'nt anonymous .
If the person who did give my shot 2 would like to get in touch and tell me why , i'll listen and learn , thats why were here after all .

I'll be the first to admit that we're trying something bit unusual here. It's constantly under review and we do find new aspects concerning the forum and gallery software every now and again that can address issues raised by feedback like yours
