Hi, I'm a newbie and I'm looking for some critique on my photos. I recently picked up a digital SLR, started reading up some techniques, and would appreciate any feedback on the following shot I took during a visit to Montreal.. Thanks!

Re: Fountain in Old Montreal
Hi monstruo
Welcome to the forum. I look forward to seeing your photographs.
With regard to the current image submitted for critique, I do not feel sufficiently experienced in night shots to do this, so will leave it to someone who does.
Just from an opinion point of view, I think it is quite a pleasant pic, but not outstanding. I see that the buildings are quite well focused, but perhaps there is a little camera shake.
I think that you have chosen a difficult subject for your first submission.
Look forward to seeing more.

Re: Fountain in Old Montreal
Hi and welcome,
I hope like me you will enjoy posting here. (I certainly Have).
Anyway, I like your picture but suggest a couple of things.
1. Your central subject is the fountain and therefore the buildings on the right are distracting.
2. Ask yourself questions like "What would the picture look like if I got closer to the fountain?" Or "Would a portrait aspect work better"
The picture seems sharp enough and I personally like the "star" effect in the top right. Thanks for posting.
Best regards
Josh

Re: Fountain in Old Montreal
Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. I've never posted publicly to ask for critique before, so this is a new experience and I really like it so far.
As for Josh's comment regarding moving closer to the fountain and the possibility of a portrait, I actually took one like that also. Maybe you guys can give me some feedback on it also? I took it with the building as a background, let me know what you think..
