  • Croatian Senior Citizen

This old lady was looking the other way and I thought I would try to get a snap whilst she wasn't looking.

Someone walking in front of me asked her, very politely, if she could take a photograph; the old lady growled and turned her head away from the other lady and towards me just as I took the photograph. She didn't look very pleased.

We were on the Island of Brac and this village was the oldest on the island. I thought her dress fitted the surroundings.

Love it Audrey, you captured her expression perfectly. The woman is certainly in keeping with the background as well and gives a definate feel of an old European rustic country village.

The only thing I may have done is to add a subtle vignette therefore darkening the corners a touch, also with a more limited depth of field the background would have been softened and the eye would be concentrated on the subject. Full marks though for capturing a great image

You really do seem to have a knack for capturing these 'people' shots so well and this one's an absolute gem!

Have to agree with what has already been said, her skin tones against the stonework of the buildings looks so right. Her stance and expression indicate heat and tiredness just like the aging building, yet there is dignity in the composition. A part happenstance that worked well for you. I like it.

Thanks to you all for your comments.

Since using Lightroom, I had forgotten about vignettes (although I know it can be done through LR). I also don't know whether I can make frames through Lightroom. I am sure someone will advise me.

Back to the picture. I looked in my Gallery to see which camera I used for the picture, only to find that the EXIF is not shown. Does this mean that the EXIF is never shown when adjustments are carried out in LR?

Anyway, this pic was taken with my Panasonic Lumix Ultra Compact. 1/50 sec F4.5.

Dunno about all that but you simply must have a large print from this shot! it's amused me all day because the woman's face, posture and general expression and demeanour reminds me very much of the way my father-in-law used to sit when my mother-in-law was having a go at him. He'd sit exactly like that, hand one one side of the face, the other flopped down like hers and resigned to his fate.

David agrees ..... so that woman's name must be Jim.

Well captured Audrey! I agree to a certain extent that by softening or blurring the background would make the subject more prominent but then some of the character from the weathered building & its detail would be lost! Perhaps by using a slight desaturation of the background with a very subtle/slight guassian blur together with an increase of saturation & contrast to the subject may produce an interesting alternative! A slight crop of the right hand side would also draw more focussed attention to the subject!
