I am no expert at horses, but i do feel that lighting is everything, I too have tried to photograph them in the evening and I find the light is not flattering to horses, or at least I get it wrong.
The colours seem a little oversaturated and the blues a little purple on my screen, saying that, pic no 2 is my favourite as it is the classic look, I have one in my album similar to that.
Keep the horse pics coming I think they make good subjects but I'm biased
