Hi Gina, I am just a beginner in digi photography but will have a go.

The night shot is beautiful, love the colors and reflections, a brilliant photoraph of a very difficult subject to take correctly, (I know because my night shots tend to be a disaster).

The dog shot "in my opinion" looks as if it has been over sharpened, either in camera or post processing? I may be wrong, it could be the way the light is reflected off the hair. A lovely image none the less.

Both shots are nice. I've not done any night shots in a long time, but one thing to consider is not waiting until it's fully dark!

First shot did look over sharpened till I expanded it to full size, then It looks ok. High lights are too bright and have lost detail. If the original from camera was darker then you have over done the processing. Do you use the histogram as a guide? Lovely shot of the dog and for me a slight softening of the edges of the picture would improve the overall image.
Second shot is very colourful. Have you increased the saturation or was it really that vibrant. Like the shot, would look nice on a calendar.

both great shots Gina, as for the over sharpening one member mentioned i sense that also, the sort of effect i always see in my shots of foliage or in the tree leaves, a sort of sparkling effect, that i believe ,one never had when film was used, i,m a beginner , so could be wrong, john

            Hi Gina,

The dog shot, like other users mentioned, looks oversharpened and the artifacts from oversharpening are visible.

The second shot looks OK. I would say it is more contrasty than it should be, ot than I would prefer personally. Also when taking nightshots, consider sometimes (according to the lighting of course) the possibility to use the camera in "incandescent" mode (usually when the skies are black dark and the enviromental lighting in the minimum it could be) so the street lighting will not come out in red color.

            Regards
            George

                Hello Ron,

Thanks for your comments. I agree that I've over processed this shot but it's all a learning curve. Could you say more about the histogram please?

The night shot was taken just by chance on the bridge, using the wall for stability. No I've not tampered with the colours, it really was that vibrant. I have another very dark shot but there's a bit of blur. I'll post it anyway. Getting constructive criticism is a good thing!

                Big thankyou to everyone.

Hi Gina, a histogram is a feature on many cameras that lets you check to see if the exposure is correct. Many editing software packages also include a histogram which gives you a good starting point when adjusting the exposure ie darkening or lightening your image. Try Google histogram for more information on how to use them.

This is a good source of information.
