Hi Ron,
After a second look I agree, leave it in but move it to the side via digi majic or cropping, I've got a lot to learn. (Magic) including how to spell.
Given that this photo was taken with a Kodak DX 4530 (a 5MP camera model of 2003) with not some extinction for its image quality, I believe that the first image posted was an untouched straight out of the camera crop or a cropped image taken initialy at lower resolution (let's say of 3MP or 1.2MP).
There is some chroma noise in the first picture posted and some jpeg artifacts.
In the second image posted, there is some different croping and the buoy is not that much centered and some noise reduction has been applied from what I saw.
Though I'm surprised billbirchall that while you can crop different the photo (in the second posting) and apply some noise filtering, you don't know how to resize a picture.
Maybe if you can tell us the software you use we will be able to help you of how to do it.
Unless you want to post the full size photo.
But generally, I think you've got the meaning with the centralization of an object in the frame.

Archangel. The software I use is Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0.The original photo was not the first one submitted. I attach the original which as I said in an earlier reply, was taken from the boat and framed with the window.
I suppose in some respects this puts a different perspective on the image, you could easily argue that the photo should be left as it acknowledges that you are on your holiday and on a boat etc. However if you wanted to make another shot from it, as it appears you may, then what about this crop.

I agree and I read your initial post carefully before my first post. By writting "untouched" I was talking in terms of image post-proccessing apart from cropping.
Personally I like the picture that includes part of the window for the simple reason that apart from outer scenery and location, it also gives an idea of photographer's location/position.
Also Stephen's attempt is the one the best describes how photos like those should be taken according to my opinion of course.
Hi Guys!
Well I certainly put my head above the parapet, with my first photo critique.I have gone from noise and contrast issues to the location of the buoy and seals (the central focus of my shot!) to whether it should have been in the shot at all.
We then had a portrait view as opposed to my landscape. Most seemed to be pretty unimpressed with it, but one or two liked it. It certainly was a baptism but I have learned something from it.
