Re: Bamburgh revisited
I have probable got this all wrong Stephen. I can't make my mind up as to what mood you are trying to portray here. If it's doom and gloom then it comes across. I see this image completely different to how you have presented it. First I would crop some of the foreground to make the castle a more important part of the scene, plus selective lightening of the castle to attract the eye and show more detail. Apply a general brightening to the image to give it more punch. That's how I see it. Like I say obviously totally different to you.

Re: Bamburgh revisited
Thanks for your thoughts on this Ron, its very much appreciated. It is quite possible that the picture looks different on your screen to what it does on mine. However it made me re-examine the picture and I'll admit that the Levels graph did indicate that some general lightening was possible, so I have tweaked it to do that.Originally posted by lumix View PostI have probable got this all wrong Stephen. The photo was taken at Dawn and there was no sunshine (much to our disgust) though obviously there are varying amounts of light being allowed through the cloud bank. In my processing I have added more mid tone contrast and more black to give it a more dramatic feel. I didn't especially want to highlight the castle by making it look lighter, as though there was sun on it. For me it was just an ominous shape and part of the landscape. the picture is one of sea, sand, dune, sky and castle and each one goes to make up part of the whole, if that makes sense

Re: Bamburgh revisited
Must say the second version looks much better on my screen. Now you have described the scene I feel the title should have been "Dawn light on Bamburgh". I still want to put a shaft of light from that cloud break on to the castle.Originally posted by Stephen View PostThanks for your thoughts on this Ron, its very much appreciated. I could happily live with the title Ron, but don't you think the shaft of light idea is a little clichedOriginally posted by lumix View PostMust say the second version looks much better on my screen. Re: Bamburgh revisited
I prefer the 2nd version Stephen! I understand that the sea, sand & grassy foreground are part of the whole, but still find that there seems to be tooo much open space on the left hand side, making it slightly unbalanced, but that is my personal taste or opinion! I do like the little white flowers, giving the grassy foreground some more texture & interest...as well as the bench! I would've liked to have seen the flowers bigger, more a part of the foreground.....giving more planes to the overall photo, which correct me if I'm wrong, you normally do!Jocelyn

In this instance it would have destroyed the feel of the image I wanted though. Also there was a bit of breeze and the grass was blowing about making it difficult to get it really sharp. The castle though is on a third line and I feel makes the image quite well balanced

Re: Bamburgh revisited
You are getting there, but I now think the whole pic is a bit on the light side and I would prefer a touch more saturation in the foreground - only a touch though.

Hi Stephen
Bamburgh castle - I think you could spend a life time taking photographs. Very nice indeedy - I prefer the second shot, I think it's a choice of a little more light for me.
Cheers

Re: Bamburgh revisited
I'll join the general chorus and say I prefer the second version. It is, of course, personal preference but I do prefer the lighter one. However, any lighter and I think the sky would blow. I like that you've had the confidence to leave in all that sky - I'd probably have cropped it then wondered why it didn't look right

Re: Bamburgh revisited
Ok here's a rare thing..............I will offer some critique
I like it................................enough said............
Seriously I like the moody bleakness, I think stephen we may have similar tastes for the moody shots.
It makes me think of Arthurian legends and the like, so if it is trying to speak to people it is a fine example as originaly posted IMVHO
