They took me back to the dark old days when I was learning to type on a sit up and beg imperial 66 - the days of having to clean the type face once a week with a spirit soaked cloth or a lump of blutack.

    A striking series of images

It reminds me of when I started High School & Typing classes! Learning how to touch type & knowing the qwerty board! Our hands on the keyboard, cardboard flap over our hands & an exercise text book to our side that we had to copy, accompanied to a metronome or clackety, clackety, clack......rrrrrrrpppp....ptttt music that sped up every couple of minutes!
However that machine looks even more ancient than the ones we had, which was shortly before electric typewriters brought into the education system in South Africa!

Agreed, wonderful evocative images. The B/W grainy presentation adds to the mood. Nos 4 and 5 took me deep into thought, then I had to lol when Caz mentioned blu-tack. I remember getting a pin out at times.

Did you add the dust (?) to Nos 1 and 3? I ask because it looks a little false like talcum powder.

        Thank you for the time-slip.

Oh, and how annoying was it when you fell out of rhythm and that basket of striking thingies got all bunched up on that dirty old ribbon !

I had forgotten that jojo & had a real good laugh remembering the dratted occassions when that happened.....it was a job to get them apart once they all glumphed together & the point of the exercise was partly to ascertain how many words per minute you could type too!!

They still make you do speed tests - but at least they taught touch typing.
The kid I work with uses her 3 middle fingers to type and holds her little fingers in the air, then wonders why her hands ache at the end of the day. I've tried to teach her to use all her fingers, but she just thinks it feels weird - I ask you!

BTW, the last time I was tested I scored higher than I ever could have on one of those old sit up and beg... 80+, can't remember what now and certain I couldn't beat it any more.
