  • Chipmunk at the Grand Canyon

Here's another from the my recent trip to the Grand Canyon:

I think the blown white fur can be excused as this was taken using a pocket-sized compact, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5, on full 'intelligent' auto, hand held @ 1/40th second at a zoom setting equivalent to a 280mm tele.

I have cropped it slightly and made a few other simple tweaks.

You can see the full size original JPEG here:

Lovely looking creatures which always remind me a bit of our grey squirrel.
Surprised you didn't crop this more and go for the portrait mode.

Yes, interesting comment re the crop. It just didn't come to mind. I guess I wanted to preserve the blurred background (behind the chipmunk and the rock is is precipice).

I think this is a very charming picture of the chipmunk Ian. The blown highlight doesn't bother me in the slightest and is only to be expected with the sun shining from the right. My own opinion is that a portrait crop would not be a good idea as somehow it would be taking the chipmunk out of context almost, and out of its natural habitat. At least as it is we get a feel for its environment. Also the blurred area gives the creature space within the frame which a portrait crop would take away.

how brilliant to be able to take a photo of this animal in its natural habitat.
so the blown white realy is not an issue.
But you can see the sun coming in on the white, and showing it up more, so maybe the blown is not entirely photographs fault.
