  • A Breath of Spring

I wanted to show you a photograph that I quite liked, but in my gallery it looks quite dull and desaturated with a definite green cast.

Why should there be so much difference between what I see in Photoshop and my gallery?

The fallen leaves were a rich golden and the tree had gold hints and the daffs a bright yellow.

This is a new computer and I haven't yet calibrated the screen, but to my eye it doesn't look too bad.

Anyway I will post it. I would like you to imagine that the colours were better and perhaps let me know what you think of it as an image. Does it work? I just wish I'd got all the daff leaf in the pic on the right hand side.

The colours could be more vibrant but I'll let others more able comment on that problem. I also think the daffs and their foilage could stand being a bit sharper, I can see a slight blur which seems to effect the whole clump.
I do however love the low viewpoint of this shot and feel it is worth spending some time on.

I took your photo into CS3 and the colours do indeed look much better than online. So I looked at the colour profile and noted it's assigned ProPhotoRGB - so it shows up pale and washed out online. I'm certainly no great expert on these things but I think you might get a better online result if you assign the profile to sRGB ..... (same sort of situation when you process and assign Adobe RGB and then discover it looks less saturated and vibrant online).

Hope that helps but I'm open to correction or any other suggestions.

Prophotorgb is the default output colour space in Lightroom. You can change this in Preferences - External editing, to sRGB which should solve this issue

I think had the leaves come out the gold colour you explain ie more vibrant, the pic would be a lot better. Would the photo perhaps have been better if taken a bit closer, increasing the depth of field? The clump of daffs seem to take on more interest when giving the pic a tighter crop at the top imo!

I converted the colour space to sRGB and it has retained those colours you wanted.

Thanks All for your input. After I had posted it I began to think that it must be to do with the colour space. I have now altered it. I am still a bit puzzled though, as it looks OK on my screen.

It will be ok on your screen, also ok when you open it in Photoshop. If you were to drag a copy of the ProPhoto RGB version into your internet browser you'd find it would show faded colours though.

That's because sRGB is the standard supported by internet browsers.

No doubt one of the high-tech peeps could probably elaborate more on all of that .. I'm just a simple old soul so I have to stick to the simple explanations (the only ones I understand)

BTW Audrey ...... it's a nice picci. Cheerful, colourful and nice to see some real signs of Spring!

Ah thanks Pol. I liked it too. I think daffs are my favourite flower and I particularly like to see them in the woods.
