I used a form of the Orton technique (blending soft and sharp images).

Roger, have you any info on this Orton technique, I've not heard of it before. Also I would be interested to know why you used it on this particular image. Just keen to understand your thinking

The Orton technique is well explained here http://www.naturephotographers.net/a.../dw0106-1.html but there are many references on the web.

It's a technique I use from time to time on suitable photos - those I want to look a little less photographic. I think with the right original sometimes quite striking images can result. They can look good printed to A3 and framed.

      Anyway it's good fun

Yes, now I see the details I realise I have seen it before. Orton of course used slides originally to create the effect.

However I still wonder why you decided to use the technique on the horse portrait.

If I'm honest I just feel it has degraded the image to the extent that it simply looks soft and suffering from over compression. The creative effect simply doesn't seem to work for me on such a subject.

Ah well, some you win some you lose Thanks for your opinion though, I do appreciate you taking the time.

I'll try something different next time
