Cold down by the river this morning! I saw this on the way to work and couldn't resist, so I was 5 minutes late . Wish I'd got the tripod out and taken multiple exposures for an HDR version, maybe next time...

Processed from RAW with the tools at my disposal at work, I'll run it through DxO tonight and see if I can tweak it a bit.

Looks a bit blue on this monitor (a 24" HP2465 "borrowed" for the day)? It also looks a bit noisier than usual...

Lovely winter scene Stuart, I feel I recognise this location from a shot you took last year, it had some cows in it though I can see why you were thinking in terms of HDR but if you had underexposed a bit for that sky I'm sure you could have lifted the land area later. Anyway you may be able to tweak that a bit in the raw converter then the jpeg in PS later.

One small point, I think I would have cloned out that bird altogether

I think this is just fine as it is except for the bird. Had it been closer and more definable then it would not look out of place but as it is it could easily be mistaken for a spot on the lens.
I like the visual effect of that slight blue hue which i think adds reality to the obvious low temperature. The noise is virtually nonexistant to me and certainly doesn't spoil my enjoyment of viewing.

It was worth being 5 minutes late for work!

The reflections are spot on, you can FEEL it's cold! The light was gorgeous this morning on the way into work... but I didn't dare stop because they were announcing all sorts of trouble on m1/a5/a43 and I was trying to figure out a route which avoided all three!

I love the delicate blue and green tones, and agree with the others - the bird must go...

Cant really add any proffesional advice or critique, but its an amazing photo, I cant believe how clear it is, when ever I try frosty mornings its always hazy and misty, never crisp and clear like this, almost looks like a painting.

Beautiful shot, beautiful scene and there isn't anything much I can add to what's been said already.

The overall colour palette is gorgeous and I love the naturally occurring subtle and gentle gradients in the sky...... very typical of the frosty morning skies we're getting at the moment.

I didn't even notice the speck of a bird until it was mentioned as my eyes were following the line of the river & overhanging boughs! A superb photo! I feel cropping directly under bird would do the trick fantastically! I must say, if I ever had to stop on the way to work for something as beautiful as this, I'd take a lot longer than 5 minutes, as I would get a little carried away with the opportunity!

Thanks for the kind comments all, here's a revised version without the bird

This version has been processed using DxO 5 and I think more accurately reflects what I saw, with the fog still rising and the sunlight from the right. I think the original was a bit too dark and the sky overcooked..

I think it's an improvement?

I really like the variety of white tints Stuart - it wouldn't look out of place in a Dulux/Crown Paints advert!

Now you have left me undecided - The original definately has more punch but having seen your revision you are right about the blue cast but removing it leaves it a little flatter, however it is still a great image. Perhaps a border like on your original might give it more definition. BTW Can I see your bird on top of the tree

no sorry the original stands out far better, in my opinion

I love the way you have caught the reflections on the river,
In the original, I can imagine stood there shivering, it speaks volumes of cold.
where your second one did not

I can imagine this as a scene from wind in the willows in winter and ratty getting the boat out



p.s can I add the first one minus the bird, is one I would consider to be framed and on the wall.
