  • The Grass Fence

For some reason I went out onto Marsden Moor yesterday afternoon looking for, well, I dont no really, something, I took my camera but did not no if I would need it, it was dull, high winds, and I did not expect to capture anything of the landscape with such a bleak outlook.

It was sad from an image point of view, but I dont think that is why I was out there, I was happy to get some good old fresh air!!

I was free, free of the bourden of work, free of the bourden of life, free of the bourden of living, it was so strange, I did not feel anything.

This was the only picture i came back with.

I hope this picture in some way portrays some of the above!!

Not quite sure what it portrays Ash, but I like it. It looks like a barbed wire fence covered in grass? I think it is a strong dynamic picture and it was worth your trip out. I like the mono.

The grass blowing mirrors the cloud formation.

cor blimey Ash, are you turning into a poet as well as photographer!

Anyway, back to the picture, I think is a super capture, however, it seems a little flat to me, lacking in tonal range, almost like it needs a bit of a boost.

This is especially apparent on the left hand side of the shot. I think I would be inclined to tweak this a little in either curves, or levels.

            Re: The Grass Fence

After looking at the picture for a while, and after ben's comments ive tried tweeking the raw file of the shot, horizon levelled, tighter crop on the sky but wider crop on the fence, and adjusted the curves like ben said and managed to bring out a bit more detail, unfortunatley by doing this it made the jpg larger and for posting purposes would only let me save it as a medium quality jpg at this size, even so I still think its better than the original. I wanted to keep it the same size as its easier to compare with the original i posted(maybe a little large anyway).
Any comments welcome, I maybe realise now why I did not get much feedback from the shot originally as there was alot wrong with it.
What do you think now? Ive posted both shots for easy comparison.

            Original.

              Hi Ash,
I like the photographs very much, windswept, desolate and bleak, a little like your mood as you desgribed it, I like the toned effect but I feel that a pure mono image woukld have more impact, super images and well worth the trip, both for the image and your mental well being, if you feel that way for long I would seriously suggest you seek some help, you describe "depression" extremely clearly, I do hope this was an overstatement/verbal dramatisation on your part.
              best wishes
              Dave.

Thanks dave Im glad you like the shots, I think we all get a bit stressed and depressed every now and again, and a walk out on the moors with my camera very quickly breathes life into my wellbeing
You did'nt say which one you prefer, I presume you like both
                cheers
                Ash.

                  Hi Ash,
Sorry about that, I do like them both but the tweeked version would get my vote, and as said I think a pure mono version would be more dramatic if done right.

                    Re: The Grass Fence

I prefer the tweaked version, the components appear more defined. Although it does look quite bleak and desolate (and cold!) the brightness in the RH sky keeps it from being depressing. I can almost feel my eyes watering in the wind. Bet it felt good to get back into the warm.
