  • Quarry

    Hi,
Have been out of commission for a while but now I am OK and back into photographs. This was a disused quarry in the centre of the South Island New Zealand. It had been originally a source of gold. Most of the surrounding cliffs had been sluiced to wash down the gold bearing material.

I like the desaturated treatment. It almost looks like a watercolor painting. I think this photograph would probably need to be printed fairly large to enhance its three-dimensional qualities that come out of the strong foreground, midground, background transitions. I particularly like the sky and the foreground triangular stone! The cloud lines appear to echo the dominant triangular edge of the foreground rock.

    Wonderful!

Not sure about this, firstly I think of a quarry as being a big hole, and second the sky just looks too false for me, probly look better alot bigger.
      cheers

        Ash.
        I agree with Raul.
I also agree with you Ash in so much as the picture has a unreal feel, but isn't that what Trev intended, rather than just a straight record. It would then have been just another landscape nice but unremarkable.
As to quarry's being a big hole some are some are not, but in any event its a quarry, thats the way it is.

I dont no Patrick, is it what Trev intended? I missed that bit.

My point about the quarry is that to me and most other people it just looks like a few rocks on a hill. Quarry's are usually big hole's 'int' ground, I grew up near one good fun but very dangerous

'Up ere int yarkshire' I could take many pictures with rocks in the frame but none of them are quarry's!

            Re: Quarry

I found the colours very strange at the beginning but now after many views I have come to terms with it. I sometimes feel it looks like a painting on canvas. I think I would like to see more of the main mass of rock. The bush needs to be more to one side.
            I like this shot.

I love the landscape, but I am with Ash on the sky, it just seems too dark, and isnt in keeping with the rest of the shot.

I love the golden feel of the land though, its beautiful!

(Welcome back as well Trev, glad everything is OK with you)

                Hi Ash
Go to Wales then, the some slate quarry's are cut into the side of mountains or up one and are still very dangerous. I have taken photographs (not a very good ones) from a slate quarry looking down on a village below.

Ey up Pat, nowthen, Ive been to the slate quarry's int wales aswell and they also dunt look anything like Trev's picture.
I really respect you Patrick and I bet you no more about photography than Ill ever learn
My point is that sometimes even if somebody is not as experienced in a subject as yourself, you have to except there personal opinion, and angle on the subject in question, because sometimes even the more experienced person can learn something from the inexperienced person's nievety!

And Im sure your slate quarry pics are excellent, infact I want to see some
I will look forward to it.
                  cheers
                  Ash.

                    Hi All,
First of all Ash is sort of correct. Dictionalry says quarry is a place ffor shaping stones and can be a hole in the ground. What he doesnt know is that the ridge photographed is part of the edge of what is a hole in the ground (and would have been a small hill). Anyway maybe I will rename any further editions. As far as the sky is concerned .... when I photo`d the scene I used a polariser. I printed the photo and hung it on my wall for a while. Every time I looked at it the ble polarised sky jarred so I had another look at the file and desaturated the sky. Might have overdone it a little but I feel that it gives the scene some mood value.

                    Regards

                    Trev

                        Hi Trev
I wasn't saying quarry's are not holes in the ground, I am saying there are quarry's that don't conform to accepted thinking. There is one quite close to where I live and its very much a hole in the ground, but as I said in an earlier post there a some slate quarry's in Wales that could never be described as holes in the ground. You have to climb up to them rather than go down them.

I personally wouldn't change a thing with the picture, I agree it gives a mood to the image.

I think the pic is fantastic & love the artistic licence & creativity! Who the .... cares if its a quarry (in the exact sense) or not for Pete's sake! It's a photo, with a rock formation etc etc, which makes it a landscape! As always Trev's presentation & style is commendable!

Yes, Jocelyn I think Ash and I did get side tracked a little, but I think Ash was implying the picture did not look "Quarry" as the title suggested. Does that matter? not really its still a lovely moody picture.
