  • Taos Pueblo Cemetary

In 2004 and 2005 I used to submit a number of photographs to this forum. I have always enjoyed the wonderful feedback from this group. I haven't stopped taking photographs, far from it, but, for some reason, I needed to develop my photography of New Mexico on my own. Well, I am back now and would like to start sharing some of my work with you. Here is one to start:

Winter at Taos Pueblo Cemetery, New Mexico. You can see the ruins of the 1619 church in the background. The church was destroyed twice: once during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and finally in 1847 during the war between Mexico and the United States.

All comments, suggestions, feedback gratefully appreciated.

I feel that had you taken the photo whilst standing more to the left, therefore placing the major structure more right & taken the pic from a lower angle, with less sky, the photo would have a lot more impact in my opinion!

I like the photograph, but I have to agree with Jocelyn's remarks.

However, I think that the lighting is superb and the whole image, although a cemetery, does not seem so sad with the sun shining and the white snow. Usually, people try to make cemeteries look such sombre, dark and miserable places.

I also like the wooden crosses which appear to be home made and it depends on the skill of the maker as to how elaborate they are. It just goes to show you don't need expensive headstones to show respect for your loved ones.

Well seen, it is the sort of image I wish I had seen.

Glad you didn't convert it to black and white.

Thank you both for your feedback. I plan to revisit Taos Pueblo in March and I will try to see if your composition suggestion will work in that setting because I think you are probably right. I will let you know!

This is a nice fresh bright looking picture with an unfortunatly grim theme.
possibly might work in b&w but leaving the bunches of flowers in colour.
          Good shot

Thanks for the b&w idea. I have had feedback to keep it in color as well. I think both would work and give a different feel. Regarding your comment about the grim theme, i actually think it is an interesting place. That cemetery has had native Taos Pueblo indians buried there since the late 1600s. I think it shows amazing layering of culture across centuries.
