Wonderful shot with some fabulous detail. I love the lighting and dof, which works perfectly against that superb background. It all works together very well to make it feel as though he's about to step out of the screen.

Isn't that a 'she'?

Looks very close up - the deer almost appears to have pre-empted the flash (as many human subjects do with pre-flash).

yes, it's a wild deer (doe). i often travel the appalachian mountain range in virginia where you can find an abundance of deer and black beer.
