Re: Beach House
Hi Richard, I can see what you were trying to do with this shot, the shapes of the picket fence contrasting with the lines of the building, not to mention the strong colours we see in the scene, show some potential.Originally posted by richard crowe View PostTook this few months back at Killyleagh on Strangford Lough. This is one that I ignored at the time but when recently browsing through, thought there may be some possibilities with the shot. I have processed it with hdr and quite like the overall effect.
Happy for any feedback.
Cheers
Richard
I feel it doesn't quite come off though. In this instance I feel you have been too heavy on the tonemapping process, the walls of the house appear dirty and grey. The sky is too saturated imo, and could have been controlled better in the software. I'd be really interested to see the original shot out of the camera, but I'll bet a better result in terms of exposure could have been achieved without such heavy HDR and tonemapping process.
Secondly what doesn't work for me are the converging verticals, particularly the corner of the house, which is simply leaning. I just somehow intuitively feel that I'd like to see verticals corrected.
Finally and from a purely aesthetic pov, I'd like to see much fewer compression artefacts. I generally find that a picture of this size needs to be around 200-250kb which in this case would certainly eliminate the artefacts we see esp around the picket fence

Re: Beach House
HDR certainly clarifies shots! I like the reflections of clouds in the windows. I was just wondering why there are soft spots in the centre of the wakk on RHS that appear like striations...it blurs the horizontal lines? It isn't something that is immediately evident, so not that much of a problem!Jocelyn

Re: Beach House
Thanks Stephen and Jocelyn. The thing I like about this shot is the perhaps over emphasised brightness and saturation which convey an idealised view summers spent at the seaside! Again, I sometimes get carried away and over do things and can see all the flaws on closer inspection, after I remove the rose tinted specs!
I redid it from the raw in ps - non hdr and the image was ok but very flat and I couldnt get the same feel that I was after. So I tried it again in mono this time and although the feeling is different, I quite like the result. I know there are a few artefacts etc but they are only present on the compressed shot.

Re: Beach House
The colours and clarity make it attractive but composition wise it just does not come together for me. I feel there is conflict for attention between the sky house and fence and no compatability between each.
