    Hi Peder,

For me I just dont 'understand' abstract photography. I have looked at your other sets as well.

I like the one with the ducks, but thats mainly because I like wildlife, without them, again, I wouldnt like them.

Sorry, abstract is definately not for me in this instance,

I really don't see that there much to 'understand' here Ben. Some of these shots are not even true abstract. However Peder is using brilliantly in my humble opinion, shape, form and colour. He even goes further and uses texture in some. Its surely a visual thing and from that standpoint not difficult to understand.

Peder even is doing the same in his other thread Same 5 pictures only here the landscape is perhaps something the eye can easily identify, but the same use of colour etc is being used.

Peder is able to see and use variations in light which change the colour of a scene. Often though he uses a particular thing like the Swan, the ducks, or leaves, perhaps the reflection of a boat even to add that little bit something to catch the eye. With others there is none of this and we are left to wonder and dream and see what we want within the water ripples

I'll accept it may not appeal to everyone, especially if photo realistic scenes are all that you can identify with, but I'd maintain that what we see is not something thats difficult to 'understand'

To Peder, I think you have some great stuff here and I'm pleased you are now bringing them out of your galleries for more to view.

A nice set Peder. I particularly like number 2 - not quite abstract perhaps but great colours & composition IMHO.

Sorry, by 'understand' I mean that I dont understand people liking this style of photography or finding it appealing, as opposed to the litteral sense of the word.

            Re: Abstrakt Photography.1.

            It's a huge question and I don't think there's any simple answer.

Abstract, for me, is all about feelings, emotions, fantasy, intellectual interpretation with highly personal meaning. Something specific to me.

There's one specific photographer who's work grips me and I've been known to spend ages, maybe even hours, looking at some of his work then pondering and daydreaming about it for days, weeks months afterwards. Why? what do I see in it? I can't say because I don't know. I don't have the words to describe it. All I know for sure is that he sometimes, quite often actually, shows an image that inspires me and makes me feel alive, stimulates the (very poor and untrained) 'artist' in my soul. He sometimes shows an image that makes me soar and has been known to post images that made me weep and long for just a fraction of his talent.. but also make me want to thank him for evoking such emotion and inspiration.

So what is it about his abstracts that 'set me on fire' as they do?

I guess it the way he 'communicates' with his subject and somehow manages to convey some of that feeling, some of that emotion in his image. something in the image that connects between what he saw and felt and what I see and feel when I look at it. His world connects with mine via the image and something 'clicks' and causes me to view my own world with new eyes, new vision and new depth.

I forget who it was (probably 'Amster' Adams) who said something to the effect that there isn't really any such thing as "abstact" photography as photography always captures something real, something that exists" so he preferred to call it "extract" photography. I think I'd go along with that sentiment actually. So, yes, I like photography that somehow manages to "extract" some aspect of the reality that encompasses us and present us with an image that awakens spellbinding emotion and inspires us to 'fly'.

That certainly doesn't mean I like all abstract photography, any more than I like all music. I only like the ones that make me daydream, the ones that make me ponder and ask myself "what is it?" but also tell myself "I like that and I definitely like the way it makes me feel".

Mm, I found myself agreeing with just about everything you have just said Pol. I like them all, in spite of them all being so different. Of course I think for me, the most conventional of the five, number 3, is my favourite ... like molten gold, surrounded by warmth, a very pleasant relaxed feeling comes from this one.

I should explain I was referring to abstract photography more generally rather than specifically about Peder's abstract photos.

I must admit I dislike 1 and 2 intensely. Sorry Peder, but the colours jar on my senses and the ducks don't seem to belong in there.

3 and 4 are more relaxing and pleasant to contemplate, especially 3.

The shapes and colour of 5 are interesting but not sufficient to ignite any emotions for me.
