A feeling of sadness tends to come from images such as this - the b/w possibly aiding the fact. It does evoke a sort of curiosity though and interest in what has passed. You have caught a wide range of tones, something I find lacking in a lot of b/w images. The door does seem to be tucked away into the bottom left corner - I wonder if that was deliberate. An interesting photograph that asks more questions than it answers.

Hi Mike, I certainly don't profess to be an authority on B&W conversions but, without intending to be contentious, I see this image as actually lacking in tonal variety and therefore to me it appears to be a little flat. Maybe some adjustments to the curves/levels would inject a bit more pop? (unless there is a more effective way of achieving similar?) Just my opinion of course

Is this an improvement? I fiddled with levels and curves to improve the black density and contrast and to bring the sky features out a bit more?
Much better IMO Ian.
Mike I had your picture in Lightroom this afternoon and it seemed to have a lot of red or magenta in it giving it a pinky red cast. However this was not apparent in the browser. If I clicked on greyscale it lost all this. I was wondering therefore how you hade converted it from the colour version.
I'd have to agree with jojo about the picture looking rather flat and lacking in contrast. Ians version is much better for me.
Hi Mike. I agree with the others and feel that the image is a little flat. Ian's version does bring it up a bit more, but I still feel it lacks depth. The composition etc are good, but I think perhaps you took the picture on the wrong day. If you had some sunlight casting nice shadows across this, then I think it could be an excellent shot.
