It doesn't look like it was shot with a telephoto lens so I reckon he must have been sitting in the back of a fast landrover (if that isn't an oxymoron )

In the drivers seat of the BMW 320D with a very nervous German and his wife in the passenger seat and back seat respectively. Jumbo was mildly upset, posturing a little. We were within 5 meters of the fella. He was strolling along the road and gave me a dirty look when we first met. He flapped his ears and continued walking along the road alongside the car, He turned toward us glared and flapped the ears again. He then walked a little further down the road, once again turning toward us. That is when I got this shot. I will admit to leaving sharply when he moved closer.

So where's the critique. no one complained about jumbo being central or the sky being boring... Is this picture that good or is it so bad that no one wants to break my heart?

Well the main thing I see is an elephant about to fall over. Its nice to hear the background and we appreciate it may not have been a very considered shot, but I'm not really sure what more can be said that you don't already know

That was my thought. The picture appears to be level but the elephant is lop sided. It must have been a fantastic experience !

as the others and you have said, is wrong,
but and on this its a big but

when you hear the story behind this photo, does it matter too much. I agree in most photos it can, but with this its a good action shot, with a tale.
If it was telephoto, and you were a distance then maybe. but to stand that close with him charging and still take a photo you is brave...

well he wasn't actually charging, just posturing, but a minute or so could have changed that. I am going back tomorrow to find some more photo ops.

As Ben says, you're so lucky...

But what you say about posturing brought back a memory - many years ago I was in Kasungu National Park (Malawi) with my ex and a guide in a land rover. We'd been in Malawi almost 2 years by then so I'd picked up a bit of chichewa (it always was me that picked up languages). Anyway, the ex saw a large female at the side of the road and stopped. Much posturing and ear flapping went on, and the guide's started squirming in the back. I asked him if we were ok parked where we were - he then pointed out the baby on the other side of the track. He then gripped the rifle and starting yelling in chewa. My ex was muttering "what's he on about" so I translated, literally, that the guide was saying "**** move with speed".

We did - but not before the ex had paused to take another look and the she elephant had false charged us - the closest one I was involved in , any closer and she'd have been in the rover with us!

The capper was, I asked the guide how you know whether or not it's a false charge - when they don't hit you, apparently! Finally, the gun had blanks in - never did tell the ex that
