  • Greyabbey Graveyard

    Hi
Before my mate prized his sigma 10-20mm out of my hands (literally) I took a few shots at Greyabbey. The first is a view of the graveyard with the ruins of Greyabbey in the background. I have also put up a colour and black and white version of 'Over the Graveyard Wall' as I cant decide which I prefer. Glad for any feedback / criticisms.

    Cheers

    Richard

    Hi Richard,
Just my preference. I like the first one among the three. The same reasons as before.
A slightly brighter processing looks to me better but it can be due to my monitor. Especially the sky.

Another one, both the colour and the black & white, also successfully created your interesting world. A question about this pic - How many shots did you use to get this one? I guess, two or three? The clouds flow and in this particular case, it just gives me a wrong

I like your photography, however, I think you are perhaps a lot more accomplished than you let on....& possibly have some rather expensive camera equipment of your own! The sigma lens may be borrowed.....but what is it attached to?? I prefer your first pic, but think that the scene is a bit cluttered! If the background was a bit more blurred or misted...even clone out some gravestones...the scene would be improved! For me, the scene doesn't conjure or emote the atmosphere that most graveyards would!

The first IMO is the best despite the clutter as mentioned by Jocelyn after all thats grave yards. I wonder if they are a little over darkened to get the drama.
The B/W is for me simply too dark the shadows totally blocked up, I suspect all you have done is convert the manipulated colour version to mono.
In my experience I have found B/W requires its own treatment to ensure separated tones, some quite different colours can convert to very similar grey tone, thus loosing detail.
B//W is a whole art form in itself, in my dark room days filters were often used when taking the picture to get separation, these days photoshop can give those effects. For the less experianced plug-ins from various software companies can replicate different brands of film and filtrations and even replicate the grain.
DxO do what I am told is a first class B/W application.

I think patrick has made some excellent points and I would agree. The first is definately the best but not as good as your previous posts as it look a little too processed and lacking in reality. This of court is just my humble opinion.

I too would like to know what camera you are using
          best regards

According to Richards profile, he uses a 30D

FWIW I think the treatment is a little heavy in these shots, and have to agree with Patrick.

However, having visited Greyabbey Church myself, I wish I had had similar conditions. For anyone who has never visited the Ards Peninsula, its a lovely part of the world and if you ever go to the Belfast area its not that far away.

              Re: Greyabbey Graveyard

Thanks for the comments everyone. I have taken them on board. I will readily admit that my over processing is a problem and I am trying to tone things down a bit! Its all a learning curve. That being said, I do like the hdr effect and while I appreciate it is not everyones cup of tea, to me the colours and tones achieved are not that far away from reality as many say. These were taken a couple of months ago at the end of summer and I cant really remember how I processed them. As I recall I was trying for that spooky graveyard mood and perhaps went a little too dark. I normally would process a b/w shot from the raw, but I think I did do this one from the hdr colour version. Perhaps its one to revisit. As stephen said, I use a canon 30D and a 17-40L. I love both, but when I used the 10-20mm, I think I would readily swap the 17-40 for one! The extra width gives me just what I want for my landscape shots. As a keen amateur, I am always learning new stuff and feel that sites like these can offer much to the budding photographer. My skill is not yet with the camera, but moreso with the computer. My out of camera shots are average to say the least, but I do have a knack of making them look pretty good with a little help from ps. Eventually I would like to be able to take pictures with the camera and use minimal assistance from ps. To be able to use natural light and filters to get the effects instead of ps. From another site I am a member of I got to know the work of Keith Henson. This is the sort of photography towards which I can only aspire! HIs website is www.northscape.co.uk if you want to check out some of his shots.

I have gone back and processed the 'greyabbey graveyard' shot without using hdr. I have used both ps and psp and while I feel it is a reasonable image, to me it is still flat compared to the hdr shot.
