Hi Stephen been following this thread with interest and I must say this is not one of your best by a long chalk.
This version is an improvement but that old factory in the distance is still leaning over and by 1.7 degrees.
I can see why you took it I probably would, but I don't think I would have shown it, its just not up to your standards.

Come off it Patrick, it can't be that bad, there's nothing in the Gold Gallery that can hold a candle to it.

Perhaps not, it would certainly as of this moment be the best on the Golden Gallery.

OK you both make a good point. Unfortunately I can't do anything about that at the moment. All I can say is that I hope the situation resolves itself soon

I don't think I can agree with you Patrick when you say you don't think you would have shown it. I've been upfront about the photos from the outset, they, esp the first, has some shortcomings, though as Ian implied, its often difficult to see them yourself and it takes others to point them out or at least confirm any doubts you had about it from the beginning.

I'm sure you would be the first to agree that Critique is not all about pats on the back, and whilst I think we should show our best work, sometimes its good to show something that is flawed so that others can point the flaws out. It makes others think thats for sure, and it certainly made me think, which is why I showed the second image. It was something that came out of the flaws being pointed out in the first.

I certainly appreciate the comments of others, and in this case all comments have been constructive and well received from my point of view. If I hadn't shown the original image I could well have sat back and thought it was an OK image, which would never have led to the second one being PP'd and showed. I've also been reminded that a good picture is something more than just a pleasant scene, it needs something else. I think we constantly strive to find out what that is

                Re: Approaches to the Lock

                Hi Stephen,
I prefer the landscape version especially with a little HDR or shadow highlight work. As for the buildings, I was out looking at callenders with my lovely lady a little while ago, she was saying that she loved this or that picture/photo and I did notice that a good many of them were not perfect, with slightly sloping buildings and people/objects cut off on the edges etc: My good lady said " you are too fussy no one else complains" so the majority of people just see a lovely or not so lovely picture. I suspect that your image in landscape mode and tweeked falls into the former " A lovely picture" for non_photographers. and even for us lesser experienced photographers.

                  Hi Stephen, hi all,

Life is just as hectic here in Hong Kong, miss you guys (and girls), hope you don't mind my sudden appearance, here is my contribution to your 'dark' photo, which I thought is rather beautiful.

I think Danny's done a good job there Stephen!

Like most of the others I much prefer the second, landscape, shot. I would have been happy taking that..

Thanks for taking the time to look at the picture Danny, its always interesting to see someone elses take on it. For me its a little oversaturated in places, though it was roughly the treatment I gave the landscape version, without quite so much saturation
