  • Leaf

    Hi,

This is a photo of a leaf that I have enhanced slightly. Please let me know what you think.

    Re: Leaf

The leaf itself was a good job done but to me the diagonal lines of the planks have taken over the shot.

A simple but very effective image. I personally feel it's a bit too bright. The angle you have chosen works very well and the leaf is nicely positioned. Bit of doge and burn on the sunlight reflection and you have a winner.

        Thanks for the comments.
Pops - would the photo be better if the decking was blurred slightly? It was in the original shot but I sharpened it.
Ron - I will try the dodge and burn - haven't used it since my course.

          Hi Julia,
A lovely image in a way a relaxing image and would look nice on a lounge wall,
As you have already sugested you should try to oh so slightly blur/defocus the planks to allow the leaf to dominate a little more. Did you ind this still life, or is it constructed? either way a great image.

                Re: Leaf

I do like this reworked image. Blurring the wooden boards has really made an impact on the leaf. The texture in the wood is interesting in your first photograph but was heavy and did detract. I now feel that I could reach out and pick the leaf up. Quintessential autumn. (As has just been proved to me, less is often more.)

                  Re: Leaf

Julia - I agreed with POPS in the first instance also I found the my eye was being drawn from the leaf via the circular dowel holes away up to the right hand top corner. The second however has overcome those problem effects and now the eye remains on the leaf where the real interest lies.

                    Re: Leaf

I have to say that I don't agree that the second version is better. Whilst the leaf stands out more, shallow depth of field has not been mimmicked and therefore the image looks false. Simply selecting the background and adding blur is not the answer to a believable shot. What you need to do perhaps is select the upper portion of the frame, feather it a lot, then apply the blur, but try to avoid the area surrounding the leaf, hope that makes sense
