  • A flower shot from me

As some of you will remember I enjoy photographing flowers, and do on a regular basis, using a fancy light tent to quote Stephen.

Well here is one I did this morning without the tent.

By the way Stephen I prefer the white background of the second image and the image itself.

Don't like this one at all at all...to artificial for me.
The first one is very vibrant indeed. I like the way you have created the glow around the seed head.

        Hi Pops
No I am not that sure myself, my wife thinks it pretty good though.

Perhaps the one that I am about to post may be more to your liking.

Super shot Patrick!, however, I would change the background to complete white, it looks as if it has been shot in front of the kitchen blind.

I like the first one best because of the added luminosity of the petals I think is afforded by the bright background and the soft conrast of the out of focus blinds - lovely composition

Technically I like the last two because they show that a dark background can work, though in the last one I thought the bottom flower wasn't right (the middle looks misshapen to me).

You see - we all think differently. I think the blinds add to the composition. White would be boring and predictable!

I like the blinds as well, but like shot 3 best.

I'm off to work soon, but I'll post some of my flower shots tomorrow (all these secret flower fans eh?)

I'm interested in the light tent Patrick uses, I've done a few still lifes recently with reflective surfaces and think I should look into this a bit more.

Any info light tent users would like to share?

Re: A flower shot from me

Patrick, I love Gerberas and flowers of a similar genre. However if I am perfectly honest, I'm not too sure in my own mind what the best way to photograph them is. I tend to work on instinct in these matters, and this tells me that of the images you have posted I like the composition of the last one.

Somehow, drama and interest needs to injected into a shot of such flowers, indeed this could apply to most flowers and is one reason I suppose why I chose the Lily in my thread.

For me the tight group of flowers fits this principle the best, but I wonder if it still needs something to make it shout at the viewer. The only way I can think of is in the lighting, or the processing. You may have a totally different outlook on this matter, and I wouldn't presume to say I was right when I know this is how you wanted to present them.

Most definately ... nice to see a natural crooked stem as well instead of the set up starched ones.
