    Dear All,

Forgive the 3 pictures but they are of the same topic. Obviously very willing to hear your views as always. Taken this morning at dawn. Henley on Thames.

Also re the portrait shots, does it work better with or without the swans in the foreground.

    Best Regards

    Josh

Lovely pictures Josh, I think I prefer the landscape version, there is a very peaceful and serene atmosphere to the shot. As for the ducks, in this instance they give the image a somewhat surreal feel. In honesty though I'd prefer it without them

        Hi,

I am using a canon 5d and I am told the full frame sensor captures colours really well and adds a smoothness to pictures.

Today i used a tripod and ND filters to ensure that I retained the detail and colours in the sky. In addition I set the white balance to cloudy as this helps warm the colours a little during sunrises and sunsets.

        Best Regards

Lovely pictures. I prefer the landscape view best.

Is it a fact that you get better sunrises and sunsets by setting the white balance to cloudy on all cameras?

            Re: Dawn In Henley

I think so. Cloudy white balance just warms it all up. In fact I read one book which said that the correct name for cloudy white balance was actually "Sunset, twilight, cloudy white balance".

Shade setting warms even more but in my opinion overdoes it a little. In any event I shoot in RAW so tha I can change my mind leter.

            Best Regards

              Re: Dawn In Henley

              Beautiful set of images Josh!

I too prefer the landscape version to the portait, and prefer without the swans, had they been sharp then I think the inclusion would have been a bonus.

The last image looks like it could do with a slight rotation clockwise to me.

Interesting to hear about the 'cloudy' setting for the white balance too. I am lucky enough to have next week off, and hope to capture images like these, as the sunsets and rises here in Berks have been so picturesque this week, so I'll give that a go. I will certainly be pleased to get any close to how good yours are!

Would love to see a few more

Thanks for the comments. I live in wokingham so henley is easy to get to.

Re the rotation I thought the same but anything I tried just made it look wrong the other way.

                Will give it another go.

                Best regards

                  Re: Dawn In Henley

Josh, congratulations again on an impressive set of shots - I like them all, but I am drawn especially (against the trend here it seems!) to the one with the swans - it adds a surreal interest (as Stephen says) which gives a finishing touch for me

                  Well done!

                    Thanks All,

In response to coupekid, I don't need to be asked twice to post a couple more.

These are from slightly later in the morning and the sun was just beginning to show itself in the Thames valley.

                    Best Regards

Beautiful shots again Josh, particularly the first, the light and the mist are great. For me its made by the cyclist, adding that bit of early morning human interest

I prefer your landscape format rather than portrait for scenery! I think portrait format works better in photos & paintings when 2/3 is foreground & middleground & 1/3 background! I really like your shot taken at a later time, with reflections on the water!

                          Re: Dawn In Henley

                          Thanks.

I once read a book, (yes it's true ) and the landscape photographer concerned (can't remember which one) said always turn your camera before you leave a location as sometimes an editor or magazine will be looking for portrait format for a particular article or cover shot.

Now I am not saying that anything i do is good enough for a cover shot, but you have to have a goal, so now wherever I am I try and get a picture in portrait format imagining where the magazine title an other text would go.

                          Best regards

I would agree 100% with this method of working. I do exactly the same, except where obviously part of a scene is lost through turning the camera. Even then its often possible to crop a landscape to portrait format if need be.

Number three is the one I feel is the best, it would make a lovely print, I see it printed on an art paper.
