  • I just know

that these steps could make a decent photograph.
I have made various crops and taken the shot from close in and far out but can't produce the shot that makes me like it instantly.
Ideas for position etc welcome. No rush, the steps aren't going anywhere and they are only a few minutes away

    Re: I just know

It's far from easy to advise on a subject you have not visited. Looking at your photo I think I would be revisiting when the light was more helpful. At the moment you have very flat lighting and this makes the scene look lifeless. I would also move camera position slightly to the left so that the steps were not square on in the image. Ive tried to edit your image to give you some idea what I have in mined. Stronger lighting casting a shadow down the steps. I would also take three shots at different exposures so that a blend of these produced a better sky. Hope Ive got you thinking.

      Hi Pops

My first thoughts are that the steps are not really attractive. They appear to me as just concrete and metal with a burnt out sky, adjacent to very ordinary fence and metal posts.

Now I know I should be able to see beyond these facts, but on this occasion, it leaves me cold.

I have to agree with Lumix, that a different light and angle may produce a better image, but for me, on this occasion, this is not one of your best.

My husband paints and I look at his pictures and sometimes they work and sometimes not. I have now realised that the ones that work have at least one animal/human content. Perhaps we could have a Dickie Bird perched on the top.

The shadow has made a world of difference. I'll try and visit at different times of day

If you feel there is a good picture there I think it might be best in Mono with some really dramatic cloud, using a very wide angle lens close in to emphasize the angles.

The cloud could possibly be borrowed from another picture and added to the bridge if the conditions are never quite what you want. If you try this ensure the light from the clouds is compatible with the light on the bridge otherwise it will look very odd.

I agree with what the others have said.

I would also get in much closer to exclure the surrounding fences so the first step fills the bottom of the frame, a dramatic look up the steps with a dramatic sky would finish it off.

It would be good if you took a picture there on a really dark, rainy, stormy day, someone hunched over in the rain walking up the steps would look ok too.

I thought maybe if you preferred colour as opposed to B&W...did this one & included different sky & feedback of steps....bridge or gateway to the other side!
