I don't very often post images of flowers, but here is one I took in Majorca recently.

I would like to receive comments on this please.

The Hibiscus is one of my favourite flowers - they grew as a hedge in the garden when I was living in the Far East as a child. That's one colourful hedge

I think the shadow across the flower doesn't contribute anything positive in this one.

I like it a lot Audrey, for it's realism (shadow and all, Ian) It helps I think to show the depth of colour and the fragility of the bloom. I suppose at the end of the day it is a question of if you want realism or perfection? Anyway I'm happy with it, keep going with the floral photography, Audrey

I like it. I like the colours, the shadows and I also like the fly happily sunning itself on the petal.

It's sunny and it's cheerful imho.

Isn't nature amazing Audrey! I like the veins of a darker orange in the petals that match the anthers! The vibrancy of the photo appeals to me! It looks as tho' the stamens are woven together, then separate into 5 filaments at the top! A close up of that would be interesting!

I'm with Ian on this one Audrey, I feel like I want to reach in and move the flower head so it's not in the shade. Lovely colour and eye-popping stamens though.

                  Re: Hibiscus

Here would be some thioughts I'd have off the top of my head:
                  1) the fly's a bit distasteful - I'd only have a fly if I was trying to introduce a bit of gross-out factor. How much nicer a bee or butterfly would be!
                  2) Lighting: I don't think it's the shadow per se - but the fact that the edge of the shadow is so sharp on the flower - it's distracting and is too harsh. This is why it's tough to shoot in midday sunshine - you need to manage it more than you have here.
                  3) the composition puzzles me a bit, the flower is just framed centrally in the shot - and that's it - not a detailed close up where the flower fills the frame, not a set back shot where the flower is set into context...
                  4) the background is too detailed/light. You'd be better off having the background dark or out of focus, in fact, some of the background is more in focus than the fron edge of the flower.... Wide aperture is needed here to change the depth of focus.

I do however like the subject and color management.
