This time last year my Fuschia's had been cut back and stored for winter.
This year they are still going strong.

Have you been in my garden again I've got one of those. What's it called ie plant full name. Mine was here when we moved in and don't know what type it is. Lovely picture of a lovely plant.

Hello Ron,
It's a Fuschia named 'Snowcap'.
Just before I moved house (couple of months ago) I gave away 93 Fuschia's of various type. I used to grow them for showing a few years back. Now I have only 6 which I bought with me.

Is the flower like that just now, because everything up here has closed down for the season now and has been like that for the last fortnight despite relatively high temperatures. I was hoping to catch some leaves blowing of the trees for the salon but am too late!

Yes Harry...the shot was taken on Monday. I also still have Geraniums in full bloom

Took this one about 4 years ago with a Nikon D1X and Nikkor 60mm micro lens and Nikon Flash (can't remember model).
1/60th f45.

This fuschia shot looks like it was taken at night, which is an interesting change from back-lit shots.

Lovely shot Pops with nice vibrant colours, the only thing I would say, is that I am not sure about the square crop, I think this would lend itself to a portrait style crop, to accentuate the long slender flowers.

This fuschia shot looks like it was taken at night, which is an interesting change from back-lit shots.

I imagine that at f.45 and using flash handheld, the background would be black. Frankly this is the problem IMO with this way of working, where there is little or no ambient light and the flash has taken complete control.

Pops picture is much more pleasing in this respect as you can see the flower head in the context of the rest of the plant, not only this but they are also nicely out of focus so giving the main flower the much needed emphasis.

Hope to do a couple of flower shots this Friday, so will post an example if I get anything of any note.

Technically you are right, but I personally think tha black background is a nice change. I think Bill's picture works (apart form a slight shadow on part of the flower).

But this is surely the point and the result of using this method in the way it has been. Indeed the second flower head in Bills photo is almost completely in shadow.

Now I'm not sure what sort of flash setup was used but it seems to me to be pretty directional and was maybe a single flashhead. Not sure whether ring flash would be better. However I still think Pops is a more visually pleasing one.

How about something along these lines - ie ... some darkening of the background to place even more emphasis on the main flower.

Beautiful shot and gorgeous flowers though.

I'm not disagreeing that technically Bill's shot simplistic and so the dark background and shaded flowers are the result that may not be what many people would be looking for. All I'm saying is that the end result has its own appeal - to me at least. I'd never thought of shooting macro as if it were night time. I like the idea. Whether Bill had intended that or not, I have no idea - probably not, but when I first saw his picture I thought - hey that's interesting. I may be in a minority, but that's fine.
